Enlightment--God, Why Have You Forsaken Me So

Date: Saturday, August 20, 2022 5:23 PM EST

As a young boy, i went to Hanover College, a small Presbyterian-affiliated liberal arts school in Hanover, Indiana.  It is the same undergraduate school in a small town in Indiana that Vice-President Pence went to.  (As an aside, i also went to Penn for my M.B.A., so at one point in my life i could say that i had college degrees from the same schools that both the President and Vice-President did).  Not that i was proud to say so, but just the same.

Anyway, i was not a "great" student at Hanover, but at least i can say that i was a "curious" student.  I grew up as an Indiana Methodist and i chose Hanover College, simply because it was small and my older sister had gone to it years before.  With hindsight in the mirror i wish i had gone to Indiana University rather than Hanover College at the time--but that is not the purpose of this story--Enlightment--God, why have you forsaken me is!

I had known about the statement Jesus said on the cross long before i went to Hanover College, but i learned what it really meant at Hanover in an optional course in advanced theology there.  One thing we did have at Hanover was good professors and our professors in Theology were very, very good.

Now, here is what one of those professors told me more than fifty years ago.

"God, why has thy forsaken me" is the most important words in the New Testament i was told.  Why?  Because it showed that Jesus Christ was really a man, a person, a human being!  He might have been a "son of God", but he was no more than a "son of God" than you or me.  We all are sons of God.

As my great theology professor said to us, "What good is it to put your faith in Jesus Christ, if you can never be Jesus Christ yourself?"

Now, i know this is heavy.  And yes, I know some may even call it "sacreligious".  But fuck all of you who think that way.

It's easy for Christians to think that Buddha was nothing more than a "man".  Most Christians, however, would never be able to except that Jesus was just a "man".  Hell, Jesus was "Virgin" born!  How can you attribute "manhood" to "virginity"?  It was God who created Jesus.  The same God that can be seen on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, which I myself have seen.  That is the Christian God.  That is the God that created Jesus.

Well, folks.  Let me tell you something.  That God, the one you see on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is not the real God.  That God is just a painting!  The real God is much, much, more than that.  In fact, you will never be able to paint the "real God" on any ceiling--no matter how the fucking religious you think you are!

And now with that said, if any of you who are reading this have gotten this far, we "all are Sons and Daughters of God".  If you read the words Jesus spoke you will hear Him say exactly the same thing.  Jesus was a Son of God.  But goddamn it, so are you and me.

So what i am saying is this: start acting like it using Love as the way.  Get really real for once in your life.  Love yourself for who "you are", not for what you think "you should be".  Love, love, love is the answer.

And in the real day to day life in which we all struggle, don't give up.  Smile, be happy, love your neighbor, love your enemies because that is what God-like people do.  And that is why Globanomics is important in our current world situation.

Amen.
