Hi Seth, I am glad I found your valuable insights (after reading the NYT article) on trading short vol. I have a very similar approach (taking advantage of spikes in the VIX) and found your strategy underpinning mine. Shorting the $UVXY has made me quite some money (in fact it was the biggest money maker in my portfolio). However, I have switched to the $SVXY because it lets me sleep better: being long I cannot lose more than I invested and I don't have the problem that my broker wants the borrowed shares back (this has happened to me twice). Thanks! Will follow you here and on Twitter.
Okay but the phrase "like instruments" may be confusing to some. I wanted to be clear that even instruments appearing to be opposites, or at least on opposite sides such as $VXX and $XIV, $UVXY and $SVXY, $ZIV and $VXZ etc. all declined in 2015.
Sorry hear what you had to go through as child. Very much agree the quote. You have been motivation for me to follow a methodical approach for profits, i might not be as aggressive as you are in shorting $UVXY, but am short never getting into a "called in" situation. Thanks for your posts.
I like your system of shorting $UVXY using layering techniques and routinely taking profits. We just have to keep in mind that it did go up about 1,100% using simulated back-testing late in 2008. If you had relentlessly kept on trying to meet your margin calls, you would be hurt pretty bad. And yeah, the Twitter thing is a lesson to everyone: "Don't tweet strangers unless you are fine with them blocking you."

Thank you! This article www.talkmarkets.com/.../uvxy-reverse-split-ahead-how-to-position-when-volatility-spikes offers my positioning when $UVXY or $VXX spike, usually during negative contango.
