I agree there is possibly considerable upside gains in the energy sector. However, you mentioned investing in TOT, XOM, and others because of their high dividends of around 5% in order to offfset possible future losses. If its dividends you want, there are plenty of stocks out there with vastly greater dividends with less volatility than oil. I found the following (dividends in parens) Tribune Media TRCO (49.94%), Sand Ridge Permian Trust PER (30.20%), Chesapeake Granite Wash Trust CHKR (22%), and Cornerstone Progressive Return CFP (22%)
Curious to hear your thoughts on this. There is the well know idea to "sell in May and go away" (apparently sometimes known as the Halloween indicator) because traditionally the period from November to April has significantly stronger growth on average than the other months. Is it possible that we are seeing some of this effect on the SPY this month? After all the excitement of earnings season pretty much behind us and the summer slow down not too far away, it could be that we are already in the seasonal slowdown zone.
Thanks Joseph, great article. Interestingly, the stock was upgraded in April by three different companies JP Morgan, Raymond James, and Monness. Perhaps insider buying is something to watch for too. In the past 6 months, 54,330 shares were sold with none bought.
Lastly, I was wondering whether Chinese companies like Aliexpress (Alibaba) which provide free global shipping all the time for many products are a threat to Amazon, any thoughts on that?
Thanks Tom.Some interesting stats here. I'm going to add the ticker to my watch list to see if the stock shows any momentum. Right now it appears to be trading very close to its 52 week low of 0.14 which may or may not be a good sign. Is there a strong seasonal element with this stock ie is it affected by the different agricultural seasons?
A few stats that should raise concern: Operating margin: -3,642.26%! Return on assets: -33.15% Stock performance YTD: -20% That's a lot of negatives, wondering where the good news is? Could be the hidden gem, but from what I see, this type of investment should be handled with extreme care (as should all fertilizers). Maybe consider alternatives like POT (Potash Corp.) which has a yield of 4.6% and is trading close to its 52 week low of $32.23. Ever increasing global demand for agricultural crops should see fertilizer stocks like POT continue to grow (excuse the pun) :> in the long term.
Despite a massive growth in Netflix and home videos over the past decade, AMC has managed to flourish since interest by the movie going public remains bouyant. This is due perhaps due to the never ending Hollywood industry which feeds a hungry audience for movie entertainment in the US and globally.Make great movies and the people will come. Year-end stock mean expectation is around $37.
Stock has certainly been on a wave since 1998 with impressive annual revenue growth, and a ROIC at or above 20% since 2003. Autozone is up 30% in the past year alone. Earnings are out later this month on May 26th. I would be cautious considering the way many other stocks have responded post earnings. It is also trading at close to its 52 week high of $705, question is how much higher can it go?
Looks like LNKD is suffering the same stock stagnation that is affecting Twitter and Facebook. Perhaps the stock is undervalued considering the 1 year mean target expectation is $256 among analysts.
The stock has been initiated to a BUY by 6 out of the 10 brokers since October last year. This might be a stock that doesn't have a lot of momentum currently, but long term I think there's still a lot of belief that it will grow considerably down the road from Deutsche Bank, Stifel and other brokers. If you're feeling a little more patriotic, perhaps Amazon would be a good alternative. earnings due out tomorrow. Wonder if there's any chance of one of these giants eating up its competitor, would be interesting to see.
In terms of the stock price, the next big date to watch is May 26th, with their earnings report. If Tivo can continue to grow its market share in Europe and remain competitive in existing markets, then the company's profits and growth should continue to grow commensurately.
