By the way, I meant to write gas prices dropped in Israel to the lowest level in 6 years not 6 months. In terms of gas prices stimulating retail customer spending, i do think there is a correlation between the volume of purchases of gas guzzlers like pick up trucks and the price of gas. When gas prices are low, Americans will more freely spend money on bigger and (more expensive to run) cars and trucks. The top three bestselling cars in the US last year were all pick up trucks with gas mileage in the 20's; Ford F 150, Chevy Silverado, and Dodge Ram.
Was surprised not to see Amazon on the list of service sector stocks. AMZN is up an amazing 123% year to date. It does seem to be stuck below the $700 level but with holiday season under its belt and next quarter earnings around the corner we may well see Amazon jump through its comfort zone. lots of analyst opinions have weighed in and the opinions are very encouraging: 13 strong buys, 24 buys, and only 6 holds. Do you think Amazon is overpriced or a buy at this point? ($689 at close yesterday)
As interesting as these insider trading numbers are, obviously insider buying should never be relied on alone for investing decisions. Actuant is down around 10% year to date but can 2016 be a positive one for the stock? In terms of analyst opinions: 1 is a strong buy, 3 are buys, and 5 are holds. Major competitors for this industrial machinery manufacturer include: Parker-Hannifin Corporation and Kennametal Inc. With global industrial production especially in China slowing down, it's questionable whether we will so continued growth in this sector and in this stock in particlualr.
The stock is down around 80% year to date true. Is this now a great beaten down stock buying opportunity maybe? Does failure in phase 3 trials mean the stock is down and out or is this just a temporary setback. The stock closed yesterday up over 13% but here's a great example of just how volatile these biotech/healthcare companies are.
I live in Israel and its interesting how the price of oil affects gasoline prices and how the knock effect works. Here in Israel, gas prices only change once on a month for the most part and usually on the last day of the month. Consumers always know a day in advance when and by how much gas prices will rise or fall. For example, gas is scheduled to drop by around 20 agarot tomorrow night here in Israel - the lowest per liter rate in 6 months. In the US and maybe Europe? gas prices change by the day. I am not sure which is a better system. Any thoughts?
Seadrill hit a 52 week low yesterday down over 7% on the day at $3.37. Can it go any lower, or is this a buying opportunity? Annual yield is an incredible 61% but that can't compensate for the drop of almost 80% in the past year, can it?
Clorox is up over 25% year to date and over 105% in the the past 5 years. It has a decent yield as you said of 2.45% and seems like a safe industry to invest in. (Cleaning products will always be needed no matter what the economy is doing!) Question is why so many analysts rate this stock as a hold (9) vs (1) strong buy,and 5 under-perform? Out of its 2 closest competitors, Clorox has the smallest market cap of $16.93 billion vs Colgate Palmolive at $61.29bn, and Procter & Gamble at $220.34 bn. Procter has a higher dividend yield of 3.39%
So I was thinking would it make sense to allow the Fed to tweak the rates by tiny amounts more frequently rather than once a decade. Banks adjust rates and mortgages vary every day, why not have varying rates from the fed every month, or every quarter?
A good example of the risks of investing in biotechs. Although, Atara's primary product failed in Phase 2 development, it does have another potential winner drug in the pipeline. Perhaps this is make or break time for the company because it probably cannot afford another failure. The drug currently in Phase 1 of clinical trials is called STM 434. It is a targeted therapy for ovarian cancer and other solid tumors. Atara also has a pipeline of product candidates that are in pre-clinical development. Out of 5 analyst opinions this month, 3 are a strong buy, 1 a buy, and 1 a hold.
