Strengthening Your Recruitment Process for 2020

Most business execs are aware that in order for their companies to flourish and grow, they need the support of a strong, competent team of professionals on their staff. But finding the right candidates can be difficult.

Most business execs are aware that in order for their companies to flourish and grow, they need the support of a strong, competent team of professionals on their staff. Be that as it may, finding the right candidates to fill open positions within an organization can be time-consuming and costly, to say the least. While factors like limited budgets and a shortage of qualified applicants, make finding and retaining the best people difficult, one of the biggest factors is the recruitment process.

All too often business owners do not invest enough time, money, or effort into identifying top candidates for open positions resulting in unfilled positions for weeks or even months or even worse, high turnovers. Either of these outcomes, of course, lowers workplace morale, slows productivity, and causes a decline in brand reputation and customer/client satisfaction.

Essentially, taking the time to enhance recruitment processes can make a significant difference in each of these areas, therefore, increasing a company’s ability to succeed. Here, you’ll find some sound advice on how to strengthen your recruitment process in the upcoming year:

Start with Solid Job Descriptions

Job descriptions should clearly define what the job is, what responsibilities/tasks will be required, and what skills and experience you’d like your candidates to have in order to qualify. Making it too vague and/or too complicated can cause you to get a ton of underqualified applicants or the exact opposite, no candidates at all. You can use technical writing software to help you create clear, concise, yet professional job descriptions and other related company content for interested parties to review.

Utilize Multiple Platforms

There was a time when if you needed to fill a position you’d create an advertisement and post it in the classified section of the local newspaper. Modern technology, however, has taken the recruitment and job hunting process to new heights. Now, there are several platforms that can be used to find the right candidates. There are online classifieds, job search databases, and even social media which have all become very popular avenues to use. If you’re going to find the best person for the job, you have to utilize more than one platform to get the word out and meet a diverse set of potential candidates.

Use Application Tracking Software

Trying to keep track of all those applications and resumes as they come in can be time-consuming and stressful. Fortunately, there is application tracking software that you can use to manage applicant information easier. Such software allows you to keep track of how many applications you have, their level of qualifications, the sources the applications came from, and even manage applicant progress (i.e. application, resume, tests, background checks, interviews, etc.)

Tests and Surveys are Ideal

If you want to reduce the amount of time you spend interviewing potential candidates and pinpoint the most qualified you should most certainly incorporate tests and surveys into your recruitment process. Have applicants complete everything from aptitude tests to characteristic/personality surveys to get a better idea of who is fit for the job.

Include Managerial Staff in Interviews

After you’ve narrowed down your list of candidates you’re ready to begin scheduling interviews. You can save yourself a lot of time and money by including managerial staff in the interviewing process. Since they will work most closely with the chosen candidate, they are more inclined to know who would best fit the position.

You can have group interviews where all managerial staff are in the session at once asking the candidate questions. There’s also the option of having candidates come in for multiple interviews starting with general managers and working their way up to CEOs or company execs depending on their success on each level. Either way, it gives everyone in the organization the ability to ask the appropriate questions and make a more informed decision on whether or not the candidate is the right fit.

Your company is only as strong as the team of professionals you have running it. Without an effective team, your ability to provide quality products and/or services to your target audience becomes challenging. Do yourself and your business a favor and develop a recruitment process that allows you to effectively select the right candidates to support your vision.
