Is New Jersey Economically Benefiting from its Gambling Regulations?

New Jersey has long been a mecca for US gamblers. But the rise of online gaming options has elevated New Jersey even higher.

New Jersey has long been a mecca for US gamblers. Outside of Las Vegas, Atlantic City with its strip of big-name casino resorts, such as Tropicana and Caesars, has been the go-to city for those looking to get involved in some casino thrills in the states.

While this has been true for close to 50 years in the real world, more recent developments in the world of casino gaming, notably the rise of online options has elevated New Jersey even higher in the estimations of would-be gamblers and gambling firms alike.

With New Jersey now being the second-place spot in the US for real-life gambling, but now New Jersey Online gambling is considered to be the best spot for online gambling too. How has this been reflected in the state’s economy?

Real World NJ Gambling

Across the state of New Jersey, you will find over 20 casinos where you can play in real-life. 10 of these are based in Atlantic City, which is the hub of casino gameplay in the state.

As New Jersey offers the largest selection of casinos outside of Nevada, it is, of course, meaning that gambling tourism is a huge benefit to New Jersey's economy and due to its close proximity of it to New York, it makes it an easy to access place to gamble, whether that is on sports or on classic games. Instantly, therefore you have a large amount of money coming in.

This is before you consider that the way the dynamic of New Jersey works in terms of the fact that the majority of casinos also operate as resorts. These resorts have the capacity to hold hundreds of people, which of course, means that there are plenty of jobs within them. Not just as dealers or croupiers, but people who run the hotels, or maintenance. Thus, the benefits come from not only the casinos themselves but the elements that come along with the casinos too.

Online Benefits

In terms of online benefits, the first thing to consider is that both real-world and online casinos are linked as any casino that needs to set-up shop needs to have a real-world casino license partner. As such, there are no foreign bodies setting up shop in the state, taking advantage of the laws, and then putting no money back into the economy. Instead, any online casino or sportsbook, even if their country of origin is elsewhere is still paying taxes in the state and thus, the economy not only gets a boost from their own home-grown casinos but from these foreign entities too. These foreign entities also need men on the ground to ensure everything is running smoothly which thus brings more money in still. Not to mention, the license fees themselves which cost a pretty penny.

The laws of how New Jersey online gambling work again has side benefits to it too. This is because legally, only residents of New Jersey or those who are within the states can place bets on New Jersey betting sites. This means again that people who are looking to bet on a big of weekend sports might make the trip to New Jersey to do so and spend money while doing so. In some cases, big bettors who are looking to make a career out of online gambling may even be implored to move to New Jersey to do so as they have by far the most benefits in terms of betting online. Which of course, helps fuel the economy too.

The Numbers

So if we get down to brass tax, how much does New Jersey gambling actually make the state? Well, considering the factors that we have so far discussed, exact amounts are hard to decipher with there being no accountability for casino-only tourism with any number of factors attracting people to visit New Jersey. However, if we look at casino online revenue than it spells a pretty vivid picture.

$3 billion was wagered on sports in the first full year that it became legal alone, with somewhere in the range of $385-$445.6 million over the course of one month. While of course, not all that money goes straight into the economy and doesn’t include payouts. It also does not include casino games and anything else casino related. Thus, the actual figure would be much larger with a large portion being trickled down via various means. This tells a telling story of the positive impact it is having on the economy at large and how much of a gold mine it can be to legalise gambling in the USA.
