The COVID-19 pandemic proved that businesses needed to re-strategize their operations in all sectors. This is mostly through the digitalization of their supply chains, customer interaction, and marketing channels. As most countries went on lockdown, people embraced working from home and some businesses could not suffice this development.

However, the pandemic also had major winners as most businesses digitalized their operations. Crypto betting for instance had a major boom as people sort to profit from gambling as well as seek entertainment. Hoteliers and supermarkets on the other hand embraced delivery apps which boosted their sales. Here is a list of businesses that are on a steep decline.

Print media

As more consumers strive to make greener choices while purchasing their products, the print media can already feel the pinch. Ever since, the digital age commenced, the print media has experienced a steep decline as digital publications continue to replace magazines, newspapers, and books. Even the number of bookshops has reduced mostly likely because authors are now choosing to self-publish and sell their books online stores. Unlike print media, digital websites offer convenience and cheaper subscriptions to mailing lists, weeklies, and art prints.

Video rentals

After nearly half a century of successful business, most video rental businesses are flaming out quickly. This is evident as 2021, saw the closure of Family Video, America's last major video rental company. Sadly, the pandemic was the final nail in the coffin as most people opted for video streaming services from Netflix, HBO Max, and Hulu.

The postal service

The net financial loss that has been experienced by the postal service is as a result of digital innovation. The business has been on a substantial decline for years as more people prefer to use electronic mail and video conferencing services. Also, most companies are now hiring private logistic companies or creating their own shipping companies therefore rending the postal service obsolete. Even with declining revenues, the postal service continues to deal with the payment of salaries and former employees' pension putting it into further debt.

Coffin and Casket manufacturing

COVID-19 brought untold tears and suffering to many families as they grappled with the devastating deaths of their loved ones. Even so, the high costs of burials led to people embracing other forms of funeral methods. Among them is cremation which is cheaper and eco-friendly. Moreover, even after the devastating death rates caused by the pandemic, more people continue to consider cremation as opposed to coffins and caskets. This is why casket and coffin manufacturing is on a declining trajectory since then.

Retail stores

Though still relevant, retail stores are being impacted significantly by online stores that are offering competitive prices due to reduced operational costs. The convenience offered by online sellers in terms of mobile payment methods and quick delivery is the main cause of reduced foot traffic in most retail stores. In addition, people now have busy work lives as they strive to overcome the current economic crisis, therefore, making online stores a much-needed necessity.
