Having a growing business is a good thing! It can feel like all of your hard work is finally paying off, but it comes with its own challenges. One of those challenges is a lack of time.
The more your business grows, the more tasks it will seem like you have to do, and the less time you’ll have to get it all done. It doesn’t have to be that way! It just means you may have to start doing things a little bit differently as your business expands.
Here are 7 tips to help you find more time so you can continue growing your business without losing your mind.
Take Advantage of the Cloud
Technology is supposed to help us do things better and faster. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. When you have old, outdated systems, you’ll end up spending way more time on some tasks than you should.
One of the best things you can do to save time on technology-based tasks is optimizing your cloud infrastructure through replatforming.
This process enables you to take applications that aren't as responsive as they used to be and move them to a new platform in the cloud. It's a great way to handle the increasing demands of users, it allows you to scale more quickly and easily, and it can be more secure. Not to mention, it helps you keep up with the latest innovations, which means using technological advancements that are sure to save you time.
Prioritize Your Tasks
You aren’t alone if you’ve ever gotten sucked into checking emails only to realize that you’ve wasted half the day combing through unimportant messages. That usually means burning the midnight oil in order to get the important tasks done that you were supposed to get done earlier in the day.
Save yourself the wasted time by making a list with the most important tasks at the top and the least important tasks at the bottom. That way you know which tasks to focus on. If you get done with those tasks, you can spend some time on less important tasks. If you run out of time, those less important tasks can wait until tomorrow.
Find Someone Else to Do It
As your business grows, you’ll find that the tasks on your plate grow too. As one person, you can only do so much. Instead of unsuccessfully trying to do it all yourself, you need to find someone else to do it for you.
That could mean delegating tasks to capable people you have already hired, or it could mean hiring new people to complete certain tasks for you. You could hire a new full-time member of your team, but you don’t have to. You could also hire a freelancer or hire someone part-time. It all depends on the task.
A few tasks you should consider outsourcing or delegating include:
- Administrative tasks
- Lead generation
- Accounting and finances
- Marketing
- Information Technology (IT)
Stop Multitasking
Most people who have a lot to do end up multitasking. For example, you might try to catch up on your emails during a meeting or try to catch up on social media while you're trying to create new content. Although you may feel like you’re getting more done, the truth is, you aren’t.
Multitasking can cause a whole slew of problems from increased distractibility to memory challenges and increased stress. But most importantly, multitasking actually ends up making you less productive.
It’s much better to be mindful of what task you need to work on next and work on that task. Then, when you’re done, you can focus on the next task. You’ll end up getting everything done faster and you’ll feel less frazzled when you’re finished.
Try Batching Tasks
Most business owners wear many hats. It can be tiring to switch those hats all the time. Not to mention, it can be time-consuming.
You can save some time by batching tasks instead of tackling them willy-nilly.
Task batching includes combining similar tasks and completing them at the same time. It allows you to combine multiple tasks into a single job instead of breaking them apart into smaller jobs throughout the day, week, or month. It allows you to focus, and when you're focused, you can complete more at a time in less time.
Create Workplace Boundaries and Stick to Them
There’s more for you to do in a day than get your work done. Much of what you do likely involves other people, and other people can be huge time wasters, even if they don't mean to be. Guard your time by creating workplace boundaries and stick to them.
For example, you might have time boundaries around when you're going to check your email and when you're going to close down your inbox so you can get some work done. You might have an hour each day where you lock the door to your office so you can't be disturbed, or you might make it a point to take at least one day off each month to do something outside of work.
Do Less
Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that having more to do means you have to do more. As counterintuitive as it might sound, it’s actually better to do less.
Overloading your schedule actually makes you less productive. The trick is to identify the tasks that are most important and tackle them with greater focus. Then, let the rest go, or delegate them to someone else. Not only does doing less free up your time on an intuitive level, it also means mindfully taking things off of your plate so you can focus on the things that matter more.
The more your business grows, the more you will have to do. That doesn’t mean you have to do it all! It’s better to efficiently use your time so you have more of it. When you do, you’ll experience success in ways you never expected.
