Technology is now indispensable in our modern landscape. Constantly revolutionising and changing, the UK tech sector is growing 2.6 times faster than the UK’s overall economy.

From the introduction of Virtual Reality for Haptic Surgeries, which has revolutionised training techniques, to Siri and Amazon Alexa’s omnipresence, technology has become an integral aspect of everyday life, and it is this level of necessity of course that that makes technology one of the best things to invest in. Furthermore, we have managed to narrow it down to the top five technologies that we believe are best to invest in before 2020.

1. Artificial intelligence

10 years ago, AI was a far off dream, a fantasy personified in films and books only, but as the years have gone by AI has jumped from the pages, into reality, helping us to revolutionise daily life. From driverless cars to doctorless doctors AI is transforming day by day.A recent study from Accenture found that AI has the potential to ‘boost rates of profitability by an average of 38 percentage points’ and Tej Kohli, Tech billionaire, in a recent interview with Spears said he believed ‘AI will be worth $150 trillion in 3-5 years’.Taking all of this into consideration, it seems only fair that AI be at the top of our top 5 technologies to invest in before 2020.

2. 3D Printing

In April of this year, scientists at Tel Aviv University announced a major breakthrough in 3d printing, they had managed the impossible, to print a heart using patients cells. Whilst the technology is far from ready for human transplants, the opportunities this provides are endless, and this is just one example of the way 3D printing is revolutionising the world we currently know. Whilst growth margins are not as large as AI, with a recent study from Deloitte predicting that sales related to 3d printing should surpass $3 billion in 2020, 3D printing is becoming more and more common, and therefore worth investing in.

3. Virtual Reality

When most people think virtual reality, they think gaming. The ability to create a completely transformative world through a headset alone, lends itself to the world of gaming, but more recently, virtual reality has been used for pain management and surgical training.

This multifaceted technology has the power to transform our understanding of healthcare and that is just the start. Virtual reality, once successfully harnessed, has the ability to add life to pretty much every aspect of business. From something as commercial as brand development, to the very real possibilities of a potential medication free future.

4. Genetic Engineering

Genetic Engineering can create anything from meat in a petri dish to helping to solve cancer, all with the switch of a few genes. With sustainability seeming to be the major buzzword on people’s lips at the moment, genetic engineering has the ability to help to create a healthier, safer new world. Massive Science even went as far to suggest that genetic engineering could be used to stave off climate change-induced global hunger. With the very real threat of climate change approaching genetic engineering stocks should only grow.

5. Nanotechnology

Much like genetic engineering, nanotechnology will become instrumental in the fight against climate change. Nanotechnology is one of the fastest growing industries at the moment and this growth shows no sign of slowing which can only be positive when it comes to investment.Although perhaps not as diverse as Virtual Reality, Nanotechnology still manages to provide a world of opportunities for a myriad of different applications, from healthcare to sportswear.
