There are so many scams in penny stock land that you can make money identifying a scam after a recent pump, and shorting the stock for the ensuing dump. That strategy is Tim Sykes' claim to fame and has served me well in the past.
I don't think Fiverr pushes down wages; I believe that it brings wages closer to market value- in whatever direction that may be. A brief glimpse at the site makes me see the potential in Fiverr. It is definitely more cost efficient for companies to bring in people on the outside already specialized in a certain task than to train in-house. This trend can already be seen in the rising Big Data industry.
Apple has also done a great job building up a user base. There are millions of people that will automatically buy the Apple product based upon name, regardless of the specs and technology. Their marketing is far superior to Microsoft, and as a result even though Microsoft might sometimes have the better product (technologically speaking), Apple will still take the lead in sales.
In my experience, when I don't stick to a financial plan it is usually due to one of two things: greed and unexpected expenses. The first would fall under the unrealistic expectations category you mentioned. I tend to abandon my plan when I see a "sure thing" out of greed; and it usually doesn't end well. As for the latter, that's usually when an unforeseen emergency happens that costs me a great deal of money. However, any decent plan would incorporate emergency funds; it's just that sometimes the emergency can prove to be more costly than you had allocated for.
I like the concept of taking prominent American eateries abroad. The acquisition of American Roadside Burgers should help fuel sales growth in the coming years. While I am bullish on HOTR, $10+ seems optimistic to me. I would be a happy with a share price in the $5-6 range. What is the time frame in which you'd expect share price to reach your conservative $10 target?
Appreciate the story Jesse. I feel that everyone has a "worst trade" story. My worst trade came when I forayed into the world of speculative marijuana penny stocks. Inadvertently bought SKTO at its peak of 5 cents and then trading was halted by the SEC. Since, Scottrade disallowed trading it and I have been unable to sell and have watched it fall to fractions of a penny. That was all in a matter of months. Tough to admit when you're wrong, I often find myself too stubborn. Alas, "sometimes you win, sometimes you learn" - John Maxwell
Emergency funds, while painfully low-yielding, are important. I like to keep my emergency funds in penalty free CD's. I can withdraw without penalty if need be, but I also gain slightly more interest than if I were to leave it in a traditional savings account.
Big Data is the new wave for the future. If a company can make it so that the average Joe can have the same success with it as trained data scientists, that company is in line to make a large sum of money. However, that would be a blow to those that are flocking back to school to get their masters in analytics and business intelligence.
