The United States leads the world in data center capacity, with more than 5,000 facilities. Other major hubs include Germany with about 529 data centers, the United Kingdom at 523, and China with 449. Much of this concentration is driven by leading AI companies based in the U.S., including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google (GOOGL), Microsoft (MSFT), and Meta (META). As investment in artificial intelligence accelerates, data center development is likely to surge further. However, this rapid expansion is drawing increasing scrutiny. Data centers are highly energy-intensive, and in some regions, their growing power demands are contributing to higher utility costs for local communities.
