Gold (XAU/USD) extends its decline as markets increase expectations for tighter Federal Reserve policy. A stronger US Dollar and higher US Treasury bond yields continue to weigh on the precious metal. Easing geopolitical tensions have also reduced demand for safe-haven assets. Attention now turns to the Federal Reserve's policy announcement, which is expected to provide fresh direction for gold prices.
Gold under Pressure as Hawkish Fed Expectations Lift the US Dollar
Gold continues to trade lower as growing expectations for tighter Federal Reserve policy weigh on prices. The decline follows renewed strength in the US Dollar, driven by growing expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates at its July meeting. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, markets now assign about a 38% probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike this week, compared with roughly 16% only a week earlier. Expectations for another rate increase in September also remain elevated. These expectations continue to support the US Dollar and limit demand for gold.
Rising US Treasury bond yields have continued to weigh on gold prices. Higher yields increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like gold, making interest-bearing investments more attractive. This shift has supported demand for yield-generating assets and reduced interest in precious metals. As a result, gold has remained under pressure and has struggled to regain upward momentum despite its recent decline.
Meanwhile, easing geopolitical tensions have further reduced support for gold. A pause in the US-Iran conflict has pushed oil prices lower and eased inflation concerns. This development has lowered immediate demand for traditional safe-haven assets. In addition, weakness in Asian technology stocks has supported demand for the US Dollar, adding further pressure on gold. Market attention now turns to the Federal Reserve's policy announcement, which is expected to provide fresh direction.
Gold Technical Analysis: Descending Channel Keeps Price under Pressure
The gold chart below shows a well-defined descending channel that has guided price action in recent months. Price continues to trade below the upper boundary of the channel, indicating that the broader corrective trend remains intact. Each recovery attempt has encountered resistance near the upper trendline, while the pattern of lower highs and lower lows continues to define the market structure. As long as this channel remains intact, the broader price trend is likely to stay under pressure.

Gold is now trading above the channel's midpoint while holding above a key support zone. This area has remained intact during the latest decline and continues to provide important short-term support. Holding above this area could slow the current decline and allow gold to stabilize. However, a sustained move below this support would increase the risk of a deeper decline within the descending channel.
The upper boundary of the descending channel remains the key resistance level to watch. A decisive break above this trendline would weaken the current corrective structure and improve the technical outlook. Until that happens, the prevailing channel continues to favor the downside. Any recovery is likely to remain limited while price stays below the channel resistance.
Gold Outlook: Fed Expectations and Higher Yields Keep Pressure on Prices
Gold remains under pressure as stronger Federal Reserve rate expectations continue to support the US Dollar and US Treasury bond yields. Easing geopolitical tensions have also reduced demand for safe-haven assets, keeping the fundamental outlook challenging for gold. From a technical perspective, the descending channel continues to define the broader corrective trend. Holding above the current support zone could help stabilize prices, while a break above channel resistance would improve the outlook.
