Gold (XAU/USD) remains in consolidation after its recent decline as markets assess inflation risks and the outlook for US interest rates. A weaker US dollar has helped limit further pressure on gold. At the same time, geopolitical tensions and elevated energy prices continue to raise inflation concerns. Markets are now focused on upcoming US inflation data for fresh signals on Federal Reserve policy and the next direction for gold.
Gold Price Remains in Consolidation as Inflation Risks Support Rate Hike Bets
Gold remains in consolidation after its recent decline as markets monitor geopolitical tensions, inflation, and Fed policy expectations. Strong demand for the Japanese Yen has weighed on USD/JPY and added pressure on the dollar. Expectations that the Bank of Japan could continue raising interest rates have supported the Yen. A weaker US dollar has provided support for gold and prevented a deeper decline.
Geopolitical developments remain another important factor for gold. The conflict in the Middle East has widened, keeping energy prices elevated and increasing concerns about inflation. Higher energy costs could make it more difficult for inflation to return toward central bank targets. This could support expectations that the Federal Reserve may raise interest rates again this year. Rising rate expectations can pressure gold because the metal offers no interest income.
Markets are now focusing on the upcoming US Consumer Price Index report for fresh signals on the Federal Reserve policy outlook. Inflation developments in China have also increased attention on global price pressures. China’s annual CPI inflation rose to 0.8% in August from 0.5%, while producer prices increased more than expected. Stronger US inflation figures could increase expectations for higher interest rates and pressure gold. Softer data could reduce rate expectations and provide support for the metal.
Gold Price Remains above $4,000 Support as Consolidation Continues
The gold chart below shows price holding well above a major support zone near $4,000. This support has remained important during several declines. Gold recently climbed from this region and extended its recovery toward the $4,650 area. Price then turned lower and is now consolidating.

The latest recovery remained below the marked resistance levels at $4,750 and $4,850. These levels continue to represent important resistance for gold. Price has since pulled back from the recent recovery while remaining well above the major support zone. Renewed strength could bring the $4,750 resistance level back into focus.
The major support near $4,000 remains important for the overall technical structure. As long as gold stays above this level, the broader structure remains intact. However, price must break above $4,750 and $4,850 to open the way for stronger gains. Until then, gold could continue consolidating between major support and resistance.
Gold Outlook: US Inflation Data Could Determine the Near-Term Trend
Gold continues to hold firm as markets assess inflation risks and the outlook for Federal Reserve policy. Geopolitical tensions and elevated energy prices continue to add uncertainty to the outlook. Technically, gold remains well above the major $4,000 support, keeping the larger structure intact. A break above $4,750 and $4,850 could support stronger gains, while further weakness could bring the $4,000 support level back into focus.
