Since 2019, the United States has become a net exporter of oil, marking a major shift in its energy position. For decades, from the 1970s through 2009, U.S. oil exports remained relatively low, generally below 2M barrels per day. In recent years, however, output has surged, reversing long-standing reliance on imports. As domestic production has increased, imports have declined significantly, positioning the U.S. as a leading force in global oil production and exports.
