Drawn to stone by the pure simplicity of Brancusi and Noguchi, Stephen Bornstein carves derelict marble, alabaster, limestone and sandstone boulders into fanciful figures in sensuous form. The lines, curves, mounds and hollows he chisels into raw stone blocks produce unique configurations layered with classical references, primitive stylization, whimsical features and exotic juxtapositions. In carving each sculpture, Stephen pays homage to the preciousness of his ageless material by deducting as little stone as possible and rounding out his conceptions with suggestive rather than literal strokes. The resulting stone metaphors nestle comfortably among garden trees, shrubs and plants and adorn interior mantels, pedestals and tabletops.
