Rob Stein began his career as a project analyst for the Federal Reserve, then under the chairmanship of Paul Volcker. From there, he went on to hold senior trading or portfolio management positions with large money center banks in New York and Chicago.
Beginning in 1994, he formed Astor Financial, Inc., the holding company for the Astor related asset management businesses.
In 2003, Mr. Stein was recognized as one of the best unknown managers by BusinessWeek and in 2009 Forbes.com cited Stein’s tactical ETF portfolios as one of the best performers during the financial crisis.
Astor Asset Management was acquired in 2010 by Knight Capital Group (NYSE:KCG) and became wholly owned independently operated subsidiary. Mr. Stein was appointed to the Executive Committee reporting to the CEO and Board of Directors of the publicly traded holding company.
In 2014, Stein reorganized Astor out of KCG and it became an independent corporate entity again.
Mr. Stein is one of the creators of the AEI (Astor Economic Index”), which is used to determine the strength of the economy and identify stages of the business cycle. The AEI is the cornerstone of the Astor Beta 100, an investable digital index.
Mr. Stein is the author of three books, including Inside Greenspan’s Briefcase (McGraw Hill) and Finding The Bull Inside the Bear (John Wiley & Sons, 2009). He appears regularly in the media on CNBC, FOX, and Bloomberg to name a few.
Rob is the founder of the I-CARE Foundation which gives an annual grant to Northwestern Hospital to enhance patient experience. He is also Vice Chairman of Glenkirk, an organization that supports the mentally challenged to lead more productive lives. Mr. Stein attended Tulane University and graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in Economics.
