Italy GDP per capita 1961 $887.34 - UK GDP per capita 1961 $1,380.31. Life in the UK was pretty basic in 1961 although we had managed to stop food rationing in 1954 after 14 years. In the 1950s many suburban families in the UK kept chickens and grew their own vegetables. We were pretty close to being peasants even with a significantly higher GDP per capita than Italy. Having said that I acknowledge that the North of Italy was more industrial and the real peasants were mostly in the South.

Greece was a largely a country of peasants before the EU like Spain and Italy. The Mediteranean countries have been heavily subsidised by the Northern EU countries since they joined in order to enjoy a 'Western lifestyle'. The Euro problem is just a reflection of the foregoing state of affairs. A failed experiment - time to shut it down.
