In the 1950s many suburban families in the UK kept chickens and grew their own vegetables. We were pretty close to being peasants even with a significantly higher GDP per capita than Italy. Having said that I acknowledge that the North of Italy was more industrial and the real peasants were mostly in the South.
Greece was a largely a country of peasants before the EU like Spain and Italy. The Mediteranean countries have been heavily subsidised by the Northern EU countries since they joined in order to enjoy a 'Western lifestyle'. The Euro problem is just a reflection of the foregoing state of affairs. A failed experiment - time to shut it down.
