Lecturer, author, senior advisor seeking to maximize connections between finance, sustainability and impact. The Theory and Practice of Sustainable Investing continues at Brown University which supported the creation of the sustainable investment component of the Brown endowment in 2016 and inspired similarly popular classes we teach at NYU and Harvard. Lecturer and Faculty Advisory Committee Member, Energy Studies at Yale College teaching a senior seminar on energy, climate and finance since 2015. Other courses at Yale include the first seminar at Yale College on business & sustainability, forthcoming on The Transition Imperative: Climate Tech Ventures, as well as the first MBA class on Sustainable Finance. Founding Mentor to Climate Tech VC (CTVC). Co-founder of the Sustainable Finance Institute (SFI), the US-China Better Relations Coalition (UCBRC), Real Impact Tracker (which spun out YourStake) and the Carbon Tracker Initiative/Tracker Group. Created the field of Sustainability & IR in the mid 2000s. Ongoing advisor in other capacities. Member of the NYS Common Retirement Fund Decarbonization Advisory Panel whose recommendations informed their 2019 Climate Action Plan, including our suggestion of minimum standards which brought together divestment & engagement advocates around a common agenda. Books include Sustainable Investing: Revolutions in Theory & Practice on the dual sustainability/financial paradigm, a follow up to the popular Sustainable Investing: The Art of Long Term Performance which encouraged positive approaches. Sustainable Innovation and Impact suggests a system of solutions for solving ESG challenges. Our most recent, 7th book, Modern China, produced with SFI calls for better relations for solving sustainability challenges together, as was featured in SSIR in 2020. SFI also hosted the Future of Sustainable Finance at PHBS in Shenzhen in 2019, developed the Clean Energy theme for the GIIN and created ESG+ for index provider CSI in 2022, and convenes and advises leading global asset owners in a private setting. Papers include (see Publications below for further) on the recent financial outperformance of active sustainable investing, and on Africa, healthcare and impact, both from 2023, and on the Value of Everything, measured at US$500T in 2016, updated in 2020, which is half overseen and managed by institutional investors, half again in the real economy.
