After more than 4 decades working with and for retirement plans and retirement plan participants, finally decided I should try "retirement" for myself. Some say I "suck" at retirement, but I'm living my best life, doing what I want to do, writing, speaking, and - still - trying to help Americans have a successful and satisfying retirement...like mine!
Before that, I served as Chief Content Officer at the American Retirement Association (then the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries) from 2014 through 2023 - a non-profit professional organization with two major goals: to educate all retirement-plan and benefits professionals, and to create a framework of policy that gives every working American the ability to have a comfortable retirement.
That follows nearly 3 years at the nonpartisan Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI), where I was Director of Education and External Relations, Co-Director of EBRI's Center for Research on Retirement Income, and Director, American Savings Education Council (ASEC).
From 1999 to 2011 I was Editor-in-Chief of PLANSPONSOR magazine, then the nation’s leading authority on pension and retirement issues, as well as PLANADVISER magazine (launched in 2006), and PLANSPONSOR Europe (launched in 2010). I was also the creator, writer and publisher of PLANSPONSOR.com’s NewsDash, the industry’s leading daily source for information focused on the critical issues impacting benefits industry professionals – which was read by about 69,000 readers daily when I left.
I began my career at Northern Trust in Chicago, and served in a variety of management roles, in my 9 years there, culminating in the development of a proprietary recordkeeping platform. In 1986 joined Wachovia Bank, where I was responsible for implementing the firm’s first voice response system and daily valuation capabilities, as well as their participant education curriculum. I also led key initiatives in product development, trust accounting, and recordkeeping and trust system conversions.
