And just to extend above comment, maybe you should rather wonder why the purchase of a house makes you feel trapped? Myself as a owner can move out anytime and lease my property to those like yourself who want to help me pay down my property. I can also take comprehensive insurance so whenever anything breaks its covered. This is regardless if I am living there or a tenant. Sure,I get the luxury of renting, but you will rent till the day you die. That money you believe your saving right now, I will be saving that more than ten times by the day I retire. Because unlike the non-owners, I would not have to spend whatever rent would be by that time as I can then live in my own property enjoying my full retirement money for myself. Please dont get me wrong, I understand you complaints regarding stress and work put into a house, but again its not that bad if you consider its for yourself.
I have to completely disagree with this article. So if I understand your thought of mind here James, you would rather spend massive amounts on renting and helping a owner of a property with his down payments? Sure its not in all cases that there is massive growth in the purchase of a home, however its an investment that WILL at least return(Regardless of growth), where as a tenant,he might as well put a board in his rented property saying "I am buying this house for someone else". Your argument makes no sense. Think of the money spent on rent over a period, and what return is there ever on this? Sure its costly buying a home, but at least I would be paying towards something that becomes mine....
