A Washington-based global affairs analyst, journalist, columnist, blogger, author, lecturer, and consultant focusing on the way geo-strategic and geo-economic developments affect international diplomacy and commerce.
Formerly a research fellow in foreign policy studies at the Cato Institute and the New York/United Nations bureau chief of the Jerusalem Post, I am currently a Washington commentator at the Business Times (Singapore), the Spectator (World), and Haaretz (Israel). I have contributed regularly to the National Interest, the American Conservative, and the Spectator and have published in many American and international newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Foreign Affairs, and Foreign Policy, and have been affiliated as a researcher and a lecturer with several think tanks and academic institutions.
I authored "Quagmire: America in the Middle East" (Cato Institute, 1992) and "Sandstorm: Policy Failure in the Middle East" (Palgrave Macmillan, 2005).
I have a Ph.D. in international relations from American University in Washington, DC, and graduated from Columbia University in NYC with MA degrees from the schools of journalism and international affairs and a certificate from the Middle East Institute. I also graduated with an MA degree in communication and received a BA degree in political science from Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
