When one of my kids says I don't know what I want to ‘be’ when I grow up I can honestly tell them that if my career path is an example that they need not worry. I was never much of a poet but Emerson's quote "It’s not the destination, It's the journey." is too true.
(Systems Thinking & Seeing the Big Picture) When I started out as a geologist I never dreamed of the numerous meanders my work would take me along. But what I have learned is that the foundation those studies provided, in being able to see the big picture and the interdependence of systems, would be invaluable.
(Adaptability and Customer Focus) The market downturn forced me to die off or evolve: So, I moved in another direction which led to my MBA and a dozen years of entrepreneurial experiences. From running marketing programs to developing businesses I gained a first-hand understanding of what it takes to identify and meet the needs of customers.
(Coaching & Ambiguity) As the world changed I took the opportunity to support the transition of the former Soviet Union states. My ability to manage and lead teams, where coaching through uncertainties to achieve the end, was put to the test.
(Change Management) Turning again I landed in the world of the Telco’s at the time when many became one. Moving through roles and surviving integrations, I took advantage of every learning opportunity offered. This trait enabled me to tackle the organizational development and merger integration challenges.
(Leadership Development) Another meander led me to corporate governance in a firm where all my skills were tested - often to their limits.
Now with my recent turn I may be about as close to ‘grown-up’ as I will get but I continue to keep an eye open for the next meander. The key is making each step of the journey a learning experience that will eventually create what the traveler will 'be'.
