While I agree in theory, the author asks a great question - if management new this was coming 3 years ago, why did they wait till now to do something about it. It makes me think there is more to these layoffs than meets the eye.
I think the author's point was that yesterday's middle class are poor today. People who had jobs, pensions, homes, etc. Are now out of work, having their homes foreclosed and have drained their savings trying to simply keep food on the table.
$CAT is going to have a tough time making it through the current cycle. I think they'll probably get through it okay. I'd be interested in the stock at the $59 to $62 range.
