I came across this organization about a year after it was founded in Washington, D.C. by Jeremy Ben-Ami, whose ancestors were among the fifty-or-so families who founded Tel Aviv. His credentials were impeccable. Years ago, I wrote a review of his fine book, "A New Voice For Israel," which I believe has withstood the test of time, albeit it is out of print.[2]
In it, he concludes about the treatment of Palestinians and others: "Is this how I wanted to be treated when I was a minority in another people's country?" Isn't this the nub of it—as a law school professor of mine used to say—or the central issue today? Benjamin Netanyahu has avoided jail by responding to the Hamas attacks of October 7th and being as vicious as the attackers. But this should surprise no one.
Decades ago, he morphed into his ancestors' Nazi oppressors; and he and the "Settlers" and rabid Zionists have exercised brutality that rivals their opponents. Indeed, it bears repeating that he was hated by Ariel Sharon and the Rabins; and the "Lioness" Leah Rabin—whom I heard speak at the Washington Press Club—blamed him for her husband's tragic assassination. She believed that peace was impossible with Netanyahu at the helm of Israel's government; and her views were prescient and prophetic.
Anti-Semitism has been rising for more than a decade; and it has been impacting American Jews, Israeli Jews, and those who live elsewhere and have been forced to hide and deny their "Jewishness." But the spread of anti-Semitism may have only begun. And ill-conceived efforts have been undertaken in the United States and other countries, to emasculate free speech, instead of discussing these issues rationally and unemotionally.
In ancient Rome, the practice evolved of killing the messenger, or the bearer of bad news.[3]. Today, those who criticize Netanyahu or his fellow travelers are maligned; and university leaders who do not fall into lockstep are forced to resign or grovel before their critics. In leading J Street, Ben-Ami has been required to walk an ever-diminishing narrow line, to maintain the organization's financial and political support. Hopefully, those who follow him will be equally skilled and adroit.
Why is any of this relevant to those of us who are not Jewish? Because lots of us know Jews who have been our friends since grade school. And because Israel may be destroyed by Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs, including EMP weapons); and our friends may worry about their futures and that of their families.[4] And because such a conflagration might reach our shores.[5]
While J Street is a "devout" Leftist group that supports brain-addled Joe Biden—and seems to abhor the GOP, Independents and our President Donald Trump—nevertheless it is a voice of reason regarding Israel, where such voices are in short supply. And thus far its leader, Jeremy Ben-Ami, has not wavered on the issue of free speech for all, which is a blessing and critical to perpetuate the ideals that undergird our great country.[6]

It seems odd that you would blame Israel for the atrocities of October 7th. It wasn't Israelis who were raping and beheading children and even babies. It was the Gazans (Hamas, and yes, those "innocent" Gazan civilians too).
Perhaps you aren't aware, but J Street's views on the war seem to be the complete opposite of yours. They don't blame the victims like you do - they put 100% of the blame on the Hamas terrorist organization. They demand that Hamas releaser the hostages. They oppose a ceaseire and support Israel's war to completely dismantle Hamas and remove them from power.
In otherwords, the complete opposite of what you say. So you are right, J Steet does deserve support, for all the reason you don't.
Don't believe me? Read J Street's own statements on their website:
https://jstreet.org/j-streets-response-to-hamas-attacks-israeli-palestinian-crisis/
You do realize don't you, that there would be no war had Hamas not invaded Israel and massacred a huge percentage of its civilians. Per capita it would be as if 50,000 Americans were murdered.
The war would end tomorrow if Hamas released the innocent hostages they still hold, including women, children, babies, and Holocaust surivivors. But they refuse and instead Hamas said they will commit another Oct 7th massacre as soon as they can, and will do so over and over again.
So wouldn't you be better off saving your criticism for Hamas - the murders and rapists who are letting their own people die, while their leaders live in luxiry in Qatar? No, you instead attack the victims. It is really quite shameful.
I think you need to do some genuine soul searching to understand how you have become such a bitter, hateful person that is blind to the truth.
I think this guy may be on the payroll of Hamas/Iran or Putin, or both,
Are you serious? University Presidents are not being forced to resign for critizing Netanyahu. They are being rightfully criticized for refusing to say that calling for the genocide of Jews is wrong. Do YOU think that's okay? Do you think that creates a safe environment for Jews on college campuses.
Oh, and only one president resigned, but they all should have for their discraceful congressional hearing, which was lead by a Republican, not a Democrat. You seem to care nothing for the truth in any of your articles. You are disassociated from reality.
If Mexico invaded the US and raped and massacred its people, even their children, as they slept in their beds, I bet you would be the first ones calling to bomb them all to hell.
And let's not forget that the Gazans voted Hamas into power, and that 72% iof Palestinians support the massacre of October 7th. Sounds like they made their bed, it's time to deal with the consequences. And thousands of civilians crossed into Israel and joined in the raping and murdering, so these are not exactly innocents and hundreds of thousands willingly act as human shields. Hiding weapons and bombs in their homes, etc. There aren't many true innocents in Gaza. Virtually all of them would slit your throat without a moments hesitation if you stepped foot in Gaza. They want the entire world to live under Sharia law and voted a goverment into power that calls for the genocide of all Jews and Christians.
Netanyahu did not respond to the Oct. 7th invasion to avoid jail. The entire country responded to defend itself. What would you do if America was invaded and armed terrorists were going home to home raping, torturing, and killing innocent men, women and children? Nothing? I find that unlikely.
With all due respect, Adam, Benjamin Netanyahu and the "Settlers" and rabid Zionists committed genocide against the Palestinians long before October 7th.
The tragedy is that innocent Jews globally are experiencing anti-Semitism at levels not seen since World War II. No Jew is safe anywhere; and this was predictable long ago, when Netanyahu morphed into his ancestors' Nazi oppressors.
He was hated by Ariel Sharon and the Rabins; and Leah Rabin blamed him for her husband's tragic assassination. She believed that peace was impossible with Netanyahu in charge of Israel's government; and her views were prescient and prophetic.
He needs to be tried by the International Criminal Court for his many crimes; and endure a fate similar to that of Adolf Eichmann. Nothing less will suffice.
Every one knows you are anti-Israel and therefore, your statements are not only untrue, they are completely detached from reality. If Israel was committing genocide, how do the Palestinian's population continuously increased every year, instead of decreased?
Not to mention, Israel has one of the most advanced armies in the world, if it wanted to commit genocide, it could level all of Palestine from the air in days, without losing a single soldier on the ground. But time after time, it puts its own troops at great risk to minimize civilian casualties. Which is incredibly difficult considering Hamas uses them as human shields.
Every other country, and every other war, has had far higher civilian casualty counts. But the facts don't match your preferred narrative, so you ignore them.
It's funny that you claim Israel is committing genocide and that they are the apartheid state. In Israel, Israeli Arabs live in mixed communities side by side with their Jewish neighboirs in peace. They live together, work together, even intermarry. And the Arab population has exploded which flies in the face of the genocide claims. Yet millions of Jews used to live throughout the Middle East in Arab countries, albeit as actual 2nd class citizens, not equals. But where are those Jews now? There are none left They've all been chased out or killed.
The only place left in the Middle East with Jews is Israel. And Hamas says right in their charter that they plan to exterminate them and commit genocide, and they tried to on October 7th. Of course they killed everyone. Men, women, children, the elderly, regardless of whether they were Jews, Christians, Muslims, Arabs, or foreign nationals. So who is really guilty of genocide? You still want to claim it's Israel. That's really pathetic.
Again, with all due respect, October 7th proved that Israeli "intelligence" was essentially nonexistent; Mossad was worthless; and the once-vaulted "Iron Dome" was porous at best. Israel is a "paper tiger," except for comitting genocide.
Next, it is hated like at no other time in its history. Anti-Semitism is reaching levels not seen since World War II; and tragically, no Jew is safe in this world. You can thank the butcher Netanyahu and the "Settlers" and rabid Zionists for that. But understandably, Netanyahu only cares about not being imprisoned. It's totally understandable why Sharon and the Rabins would hate him; and why Barack Obama has viewed Israel as an Apartheid state, reminiscent of Apartheid in South Africa, which he hated.
I suspect antisemitism is at a record high because of people like you who spread these fake libels claiming that the Jews commit genocide and have forced segration of their Arab citizens which is simply not true. It's easy to look up these facts. You are blatantly lying.
Clearly you have no understanding of what apartheid means or the definition of an apartheid state. It's actually quite offensive to claim South Africa was as free and equal is Israel is today. In Israel, Israeli Arabs have equal rights, and hold political office in the Knesset, have served as part of the ruling coalition of the government, serve in all levels of the military, and the judiciary. They even have an Israeli Arab in the Supreme court who once sentenced a Jewish prime minister (Ehud Olmert) to prison.
Can you imagine people like me having any of these rights in apartheid South Africa?
Only antisemites and ignaramuses claim Israel is an apartheid state. But you are right, Duanne - doing so is an insult to those who actually had to live under apartheid rule. It's sad when people's bias against Israel cause them to spread lies and deny the reality of the situation. But these days, people don't let things as inconvenient as facts get in the way of their preferred narrative.

Tragically, this reverberates to the detriment of every Jew globally, and contributes to unprecedented anti-Semitism.
