This PMI leads us to believe the economy will grow 2% in the fourth quarter. However, given that some data points are weak the results will likely be much lower.
Daily Update: Caterpillar Cut Guidance Citing Macro Weakness
Caterpillar reported Q3 EPS of $0.85 which beat estimates by $0.08. Revenues of $9.16 billion were down 16.4% which missed estimates by $680 million.
Daily Update: Markit PMI Beats Expectations
The Markit PMI was actually a positive report. It was the rare positive report in this economy which makes economists often say the data is mixed.
Daily Update: Microsoft Reaches A New All-Time High
The big news is the AT&T purchase of Time Warner which is probably a bad move.
Daily Update: American Express Beats Earnings Estimates
The jobless claims jumped higher. It was jumping from a low point, but we will see over the next 2 or 3 weeks if this jump is part of a trend change or if it was caused by Hurricane Matthew.

The big event will be the presidential debate tonight with Trump heading into it down about 6 percent in the latest polls.

The economic data was terrible today as the Atlanta Fed had to lower its Nowcast from 2.1% GDP growth in Q3 to 1.9% GDP growth.
Daily Update: China Trade Data Sends Stocks Lower
Chinese trade data has caused the market to sell off today because it missed expectations by a long shot. China Yuan exports declined 5.6% year over year while expectations were for 2.5% growth.

The big economic news of the day was the JOLTS job openings index had the biggest miss on record.

Economic growth continues to falter with the release of the Fed’s labor market conditions index showing deceleration today. The index fell to negative 2.2% which was a big miss from the 1.5% gain expected.
