A Guide to Israel’s Wines and Spirits

Date: Tuesday, April 22, 2025 11:11 AM EDT

A rising interest in Israel’s diverse selection of quality wines is now causing more Israeli wines to be available to people throughout the world. Israel has an ideal terroir to produce grapes with unique flavors. The country also has a long history in winemaking. From ancient times until now, viticulture has spread through Israel and resulted in the creation of multiple vineyards and wineries.

Israel currently has at least 120 indigenous grape varieties that produce wines with authentic, rich flavors. The imported grape varieties include Syrah and Chardonnay while newer arrivals include Carignan and Mourvèdre. Some of Israel’s most notorious native flavors are Marawi, Bittuni, and Argaman. Marawi grows in the Judean Hills and have a distinct citrusy flavor. Bittuni is located in the Judean Mountains and is known for its berry-like and delicate flavor. Argaman can be found in Upper Galilee and is typically enjoyed for its fruity and tangy flavor profile.

Israeli wines have earned multiple accolades and garnered global recognition. These top-quality wines were once rarely exported, but now, growing international enthusiasm has now made them more accessible to the rest of the world.
