The biggest one is just the length of time people stay with the carrier. If you end up staying the average 8 - 12 years, Verizon will make money on you even if it actually loses money up front. But the other big one is that this offer's scope is so narrow: you need to be ready to move four lines -- not two or three -- and not take any insurance, add any streaming, stick with the Welcome Unlimited, etc.

They could -- and T-Mobile is already fairly close as I note in the article -- but nobody wants a price war that raises the cost of acquiring customers so high that it raises internal financing costs for long term payoff. Verizon has been losing subscribers so it had to be more aggressive, at least in the short term. We'll see.
