Triumph Of Hope Over Experience?
The hot news on the stock market today is the triumph of hope over experience, as the belief that Russia has a vaccine for the corona-virus took hold. But Putin-land is the home of liars and in fact, the hot jab has not yet gone through phase III trials which is how you check a drug against a placebo, to make sure it works. While there is lots of flimflam on the web about nostrums and cures, but this is mostly done by individual crooks and holy men whom only fools believe. The Kremlin is at a different level but still untrustworthy.
Here are some news items for Tuesday including two results:
*Computer Modelling of Canada reported on its Q1 in loonies, EPS at 4 Canadian cents/sh. This was 2 loony cents below the consensus forecast of 6 cents. Revenues came in down 8% from prior Q1 at C$16.7 mn from $18.1 mn, ahead of expectations based on Refinitive consensus, CMDXF also forecast that it expected to earn C$17.2 mn in the current quarter. Given the problems of oil and gas exploration these numbers are surprisingly good for the company which makes systems to plot hydrocarbon reservoirs.
*Canadian Nutrien (NTR), which makes fertilizer and sells it and other farm products world wide, was boosted today and rose.
*Mercado Libre which reported yesterday received much support from analysts, with Susquehanna Bank leading the pack with a rise in its target price from $630 to 1300 and a rating of positive. Barclays raised the share to overweight with a TP of $1340 from 1210; Credit Suisse upped MELI to outperform with a TP of $1484, up from $1255; and BTIG raised it to buy with a TP of $1260 from $980. MELI reports in US$ and beat on profits yesterday which came in at $1.11/sh, ~10% over the consensus,
As untrustworthy as Putin is, I still hope this is true about the vaccine. But without phase III trials, no way to know if it's even safe yet.
I wonder if they really gave Putin's daughter the vaccine? If so, that's both scary and confidence building. But also not sure if we can believe all that comes out of Russia.
