Introduction

According to analysis by research firm Gartner, smartphone makers will ship 240 million generative AI smartphones in 2024 accounting for 22% of basic and premium smartphone shipments by the end of the year, up from just 1% of smartphone shipments in 2023.

Why Are AI Smartphones About To Take Off?

AI smartphone sales will begin to take off this year because consumers are starting to replace the devices they purchased at the start of the pandemic, and many of those will be AI smartphones.

What Are Selling Point Of New AI Smartphones?

The main selling point for these devices, so far, is that they can perform some generative AI tasks locally rather than having to rely on cloud services meaning that your data is kept on your smartphone instead of being sent to the cloud which provides security and privacy advantages because your information doesn’t have to travel across the web.

Which Companies Have Or Will Be Launching AI Smartphones in 2024?

Below is what some of the major manufacturers of smartphones have in the works for introduction in 2024 or, in some cases, have already done so:

  • Lenovo (LNVGY), which owns Motorola, is developing an AI assistant for phones (see here) that learns from a user's behavior and can accomplish tasks on one's behalf, such as writing messages and scheduling tasks.
  • Apple (AAPL) is developing AI upgrades (see here) for its family of products, including to the next major iPhone update, the iOS 18.
  • Samsung Electronics (SSNLF) launched its Galaxy AI S24 series in January (see here) with AI features such as translating phone calls in real-time, converting text into images and editing them, where necessary.
  • Google (GOOGL) has launched its “Pixel 8” smartphone (see here) which integrates generative AI built on their ChatGBT and Bart AI technologies.
  • Huawei Technologies Co. is making a comeback in their smartphone business which has been hampered by U.S. government restrictions since 2019, with new AI-enhanced devices (see here).

Conclusion

The AI smartphone revolution is still in its early stages but, as the technology matures, they will likely become the only smartphones we know.
