Daily Stock Pick: DCP Midstream
This week, I'm seeking a second robust dividend energy sector representative for my new Ivy portfolio.
That energy sector includes six industries all related to bringing oil and gas to market. They are: drilling, exploration, and production (E&P), equipment and services, integrated, midstream, refining & marketing. (Those six oily and gassy enterprises.)
Today I'm reviewing a mid-cap oil & gas midstream company, named DCP Midstream LP Its trading ticker symbol is DCP.
DCP Midstream LP is a midstream master limited partnership. It is engaged in gathering, compressing, treating, processing, transporting, storing and selling natural gas, Natural Gas Liquids, and condensate.
The company operates in two segments, Gathering and Processing, and Logistics and Marketing.
The Gathering and Processing segment is involved in gathering, compressing, treating, and processing natural gas; producing and fractionating natural gas liquids (NGLs); and recovering condensate.
The Logistics and Marketing segment engages in transporting, trading, marketing, and storing natural gas and NGLs; fractionating NGLs; and wholesale propane logistics.
As of February 13, 2018, it owned and operated approximately 60 plants and 63,000 miles of natural gas and NGLs pipelines with operations in 17 states.
The company serves petrochemical and refining companies, and retail propane distributors. DCP Midstream GP, LP serves as the general partner of the company.
The company was formerly known as DCP Midstream Partners, LP and changed its name to DCP Midstream, LP in January 2017.
DCP Midstream, LP was founded in 2005 and is headquartered in Denver, Colorado.
I use three key data points to gauge the value of any dividend equity or fund like DCP Midstream, L.P.:
(1) Price
(2) Dividends
(3) Returns
Besides those three, four more keys will finally unlock an equity or fund in which to invest.
But those first three primary keys, best tell whether a company has made, is making, and will make money.
DCP Price
DCP's price per share was $33.02 at Friday's market close. A year ago its price was $35.72 for a price drop of $2.70 per share for the year or an 8.2% fall.
Assuming DCP's price will trade in the range of $30 to $44 next year, DCP's recent $33.02 price could maybe climb by $3.00 and improve to $36.02 by early-December, 2019.
DCP Dividends
DCP's most recent quarterly dividend was $0.78 declared October 23rd and paid out, November 14th.
That $0.78 quarterly stipend equates to an annual amount of $3.12 yielding 9.45% at Friday's closing $33.02 price.
Gains For DCP?
Adding the $3.12 annual dividend to my estimated $3.00 annual price upside estimate for DCP Midstream, L.P. adds up to a $6.12 potential gross annual per share gain, which will be reduced by costs to trade the shares.
For a little under $1,000.00 invested today at the $33.02 recent price, we could buy 30 DCP shares.
A $10 broker fee paid half at purchase and half at sale costs us $0.33 per share.
Subtract that $0.33 brokerage cost from the estimated $6.12 gross annual gain leaves a net gain of $5.79 X 30 shares
= $173.70
for a 17.5% net gain on a $990.60 investment.
Therefore, DCP Midstream, L.P. whose trading ticker symbol is DCP, now shows a possible 17.75% net gain including a 9.45% dividend yield.
Fifteen brokers cover this stock:
Four say "buy" DCP shares.
Four expect DCP shares to "outperform" its peers
Five say "hold" your DCP shares
One expects DCP shares to "underperform" its peers
One says "sell" DCP shares.
The median price consensus among those fifteen brokers is a $45.00 target, nearly $9 over my $36.02 estimate and almost $12 over the current price.
Therefore, you can look at DCP Midstream and see it has made money, is making money, but could net a 17.5% to 45% net annual gain including that 9.45% dividend yield. It could be more, it could be less.
The above speculation is based on past year performance. The actual results remain to be seen to determine if DCP Midstream, L.P. is worth your time and money.
