Cannabis Central: Sector Advanced 1.6% Thursday For 6th Straight Day Of Increases

The Non-penny Pot Stock Index (NPSI) of 34 stocks trading at US$1/share or more advanced 1.6% on Thursday matching the 1.6% increase in the total cannabis sector of 319 stocks and marginally more than the 1.5% increase in the S&P 500.

16 of the 34 eligible stocks in the NPSI went up, 3 remained unchanged and the remaining 15 went down in price. The details are as follows: 

9 Non-penny Cannabis Stocks Increased 4% Or More

  1. Neptune (NEPT) +14.8%
  2. Pyxus (PYX) +11.9%
  3. Greenlane (GNLN) +10.8%
  4. Corbus (CRBF) +9.9%
  5. Innovative Properties (IIPR) +9.2%
  6. Alcanna (LQSIF) +6.3%
  7. Valens (VLNCF) +4.8%
  8. Planet 13 (PLNHF) +4.1%
  9. Zynerba (ZYNE) +4.0%

7 other non-penny cannabis stocks increased in price from +0.3% to +2.0% while another 3 stocks remained unchanged in price.

5 Non-penny Cannabis Stocks Decreased 4% Or More

  1. Rubicon Organics (ROMJF) -8.7%
  2. Abacus (ABAHF) -8.0%
  3. Village Farms (VFF) +6.7%
  4. Ayr (AYRSF) -6.1%
  5. Cronos (CRON) -4.6%

The remaining 10 non-penny cannabis stocks declined in price by -0.1% to -3.8%.

In addition, there are 2 high profile stocks that, while they trade below US$1/share (and, as such, are not eligible for inclusion in the NPSI), are worthy of mention, namely, Aurora (ACB+3.5% and Hexo (HEXO-1.9%.

The NPSI has representation in 9 of the 11 industry sectors with the constituents of each based on their primary area of focus in the cannabis industry. Below are the sectors, with descriptions, and the number of companies in each:

  1. Cultivation & Retail Sector: 16
    • sector consists of companies that grow and sell cannabis flower and related products.
  2. Biotechnology Sector: 6
    • sector consists of pharmaceutical companies focused on the R&D of new drugs and products utilizing cannabinoids.
  3. Marijuana-Infused Products Sector: 3
    • sector consists of companies focused on developing and selling marijuana-infused products and companies focused on the extraction of cannabis compounds and their infusion into consumer products.
  4. Consumption Devices Sector: 3
    • sector consists of companies focused on developing and selling personal consumption devices for cannabis consumers such as vape pens and inhalers. 
  5. Agricultural Technology Sector: 2
    • sector consists of companies focused on providing automated growing systems, greenhouses, farming products, nutrients, hydroponics, fertilization systems, horticultural expertise, LED/lighting technologies, air filtration systems, and climate control and energy efficiency systems.
  6. Real Estate Sector: 1
    • sector consists of investment companies and REITs that develop, own, and/or lease commercial real estate properties to licensed cannabis operators.
  7. Business Services/Consulting Sector: 1
    • sector consists of companies that provide professional services such as branding, packaging, bottling, compliance, physical security, transportation, lab testing, distribution, and insurance directly to marijuana cultivators and retailers.
  8. Tech & Media Sector: 1
    • sector covers companies that provide delivery services, enterprise software, e-commerce platforms, communication and mapping services, and trading platforms and companies that provide marijuana-related media including news, content, social networks, games, and entertainment.
  9. Hemp Products Sector: 1
    • sector consists of companies that produce and sell hemp products.
  10. Investing & Media Sector: 0
    • sector consists primarily of companies which own and/or manage a portfolio of cannabis assets and financial service providers that offer capital and financing solutions for companies in the cannabis industry.
  11. Other Ancillary Sector: 0
    • sector consists of companies that provide products and services related to the broader cannabis economy that do not fit within the other sectors such as companies focused on developing breathalyzers and testing kits for marijuana consumers and organizations, cannabis vending machine manufacturers and companies that provide cannabis medical clinics and cannabis-related hospitality and tourism.

As of today, the NPSI consisted of:

  • 2 pot stocks that trade above US$20/share,
  • 2 that trade between US$10 and US$20/share,
  • 7 that trade between US$5 and US$10/share and
  • 23 that trade between US$1 and US$5/share.

In addition, the market capitalization makeup of the NPSI, calculated by multiplying the number of a company's shares outstanding by its stock price per share, is as follows:

  • Large-Cap (+US$10B): 0
  • Mid-Cap (US$2B to US$10B): 3
  • Small-Cap (US$300M to US$2B): 11
  • Micro-Cap (US$50M to US$300M): 15
  • Nano-Cap (Less than US$50M): 5
