Already The Worst April In The Last 65 Years
4 trading days into April, and we have already surpassed the worst April performance since 1958. I looked at the prior 5 worst Aprils, hoping to find something positive to dwell on. But the results weren’t much to get excited about.
April is usually a good month to be invested. Since 1958 (the first full year of the S&P 500), April has an average return of 1.27% (3rd best month) and finished higher 71% of the time (2nd best).
The worst April since 1958 saw stocks fall 9.05%. As of Friday's close, we are down 9.58% for the month.
Out of the 5 worst Aprils since 1958 (besides this year), stocks were higher one year later on only 2 occasions (40%). And the average return was -4.19%.
I wish I had better news. But it doesn’t mean stocks can’t be higher at this time next year.
