The Most-Shorted US Stocks, And Three That Report Within 10 Days

Upstart, IREN, and Hims & Hers report earnings soon amid high short interest levels. These crowded mid-cap trades are primed for volatility, as quarterly results often trigger rapid position covering and outsized price swings.

Three of the most heavily shorted mid-caps in the US report earnings in the next ten days: Upstart on November 3, IREN on November 5 and Hims & Hers on November 9. Using the latest FINRA short interest (settlement date October 15, 2026), I ranked every active US stock with a market value of at least $2 billion and average daily volume of at least 500,000 shares by short position as a share of shares outstanding.

One fund (USO) was removed, so this is a list of operating companies. Two caveats: this uses shares outstanding, not float, so names with large insider or strategic holdings would rank higher on a float basis; and FINRA publishes short interest about two weeks after the settlement date, so the list does not show positioning during last week's selloff.

The three that report soon

Upstart (November 3). Short interest fell by about 1.7 million shares into the October 15 settlement, but 27.6% of shares outstanding is still sold short. Upstart already disclosed $4,117.8M of Q3 originations, so volume is largely known, and guidance and credit performance are likely to matter more than the revenue line. The Equibles preview puts Q3 revenue at $370.4M against $364.8M consensus.

IREN (November 5). Short interest rose by about 13 million shares, the largest increase of the three, yet days to cover is only 1.8 because the stock trades so heavily. The Equibles preview has fiscal Q1 revenue at $239.9M against $221.3M consensus, with AI Cloud at $191.1M, about 80% of the total.

Hims & Hers (November 9). Short interest fell by about 1.3 million shares. The Equibles forecast is close to consensus: $894.6M of Q3 revenue against $892.8M.

Why report days matter more for crowded shorts

Across the S&P 500, 13.3% of 2026 earnings reports moved the stock 10% or more the next day, against 4.4% in 2021. Last week Alphabet (GOOGL) closed down 12.6% the day after its report and Intel (INTC) 28.6%. For a stock with a quarter of its shares sold short, a move that size in either direction forces a lot of positioning to change at once.

The live, sortable ranking with the newest settlement is on the most shorted stocks page.
