Part 2: The U.S. Looks Richer Than It Really Is

While the U.S. has the highest average wealth per adult at roughly $700,000, median wealth tells a very different story. Half of Americans have less than $69,000 in wealth, about 10 times lower than the average. Surprisingly or not, several countries have significantly higher median wealth than the U.S. Belgium, Australia, and New Zealand all have median wealth above $200,000, while Spain and Italy also surpass the U.S., at approximately $111,000 and $131,000, respectively. The contrast highlights how much America’s average wealth is skewed upward by its concentration of millionaires and billionaires.
