The S&P 500’s price-to-sales ratio currently stands at approximately 3.83, its highest level on record. This means investors are paying nearly $4 for every $1 of revenue generated by companies in the index. The elevated valuation reflects strong expectations for future growth, particularly around artificial intelligence. Investors are pricing in the potential for AI-driven productivity gains, higher revenues, and ultimately stronger corporate profits. By historical standards, however, the valuation appears stretched. The long-term average price-to-sales ratio is approximately 1.81, meaning today’s level is more than twice its historical average.
