Many people out there have some extra money available that they are looking to invest in either stocks, crypto, forex, or something else. However, you may not know where to begin or what you should know.

Have a Plan

The first thing you should do is create a plan. It can be simple or detailed, but it should include what you want to invest in when you want to invest and have a rough blueprint of what you want to do and achieve.

You can also include a timeline if you want, giving yourself goals of what you want to achieve each month or what you want your portfolio to look like at the end of the year.

Set a Budget

Investing is all about being smart with your money. The real winners are the ones who are able to make a profit consistently without putting all their money into investments. Having an investment budget allows you to have liquid cash available whenever you need it.

Sticking to a budget also allows you to constantly grow your investments and build up their worth over time. Being successful at investing is a marathon, not a sprint.

Be Conservative

Unless you know what you are doing, there is little to no reason to take huge risks when investing. This isn’t a movie where you take a potentially bankruptcy-causing chance on a dark horse stock or crypto, and you wake up the next day a millionaire.

You can invest a conservative amount of money each month and still grow your portfolio into the perfect retirement fund. Taking risks may work out once or twice, but you never know when they won’t, so why even take the chance?

Short and Long Term Investments

Diversifying will be discussed next, but it is essential to know the difference between long and short-term investments and why you need both. In simple terms, a short-term investment would be something like using the profit from an investment to pay for a Christmas vacation.

On the other hand, a long-term investment would be something you leave for years and then cash out when you are 50 or when you retire. Short-term investments are great for getting money back quickly, while long-term investments benefit from interest and extensive, expanded growth.

Diversify

Having multiple investment types in your portfolio is one of the best ways to protect yourself in the event of a crash. If you have only invested in stocks, you have no net if the stock market crashes.

If you have stocks, forex, and crypto, and the stock market crashes, your other two investment types can make up the difference. Never put all your money into one company or investment type unless you can afford to lose it all.

Have Cash Available

While investing can be exciting, and you want to keep going, you must always ensure you have liquid cash available. Unlike forex and crypto, many investments don't allow you to quickly access and take out your money.

This means you should never have all of your money tied up in investments. Therefore, one of the best pieces of investing advice is not to invest some of your money at all.

Don’t Follow Trends

It is easy to fall into a pattern of following trends and investing, thinking you are riding a wave. However, more often than not, once you become aware of a trend, the money has already been made, and you won’t get much out of it.

Trends also cause inflated prices, meaning the value of the stock or crypto is artificially inflated. This leads to you investing when the price is way too high, and more often than not, you lose out because people sell, and the price crashes.

Don’t Invest if you Don’t Understand

Many experts will agree that if you don’t understand what you are investing in, don’t invest in it. This is especially true for something like cryptos. Most cryptos are based on a project of some kind, and understanding the project and knowing how useful it could be is essential in knowing if you should invest or not.

The other issue is that you will be unsure of what you are looking for regarding growth, potential weaknesses, etc. Being able to spot a good investment is only half the challenge; you need to understand why it is good.
