Fort Knox holds more gold than any other U.S. Mint depository, with approximately 147.3 million fine troy ounces. Other major U.S. gold depositories include West Point and Denver, which hold approximately 54.1 million and 43.9 million fine troy ounces, respectively. By comparison, the New York Fed vault holds about 13.4 million fine troy ounces, less than one-tenth of Fort Knox’s holdings. As central banks around the world continue to build their gold reserves, gold purchases can also provide a useful lens into how countries are positioning their reserves and their level of confidence in other asset classes.
