This series tracks the net dollar value of shares issued by U.S. nonfinancial corporations minus shares retired each quarter, excluding equity REITs. In simple terms, it shows whether corporate America is issuing new shares or buying them back. The metric has surged to a record high of nearly $152 billion, suggesting companies are increasingly turning to public markets to raise capital and potentially cash out at elevated valuations, while share buybacks and M&A activity remain subdued. Smart money is seeing an opportunity to sell at attractive valuations.
