Watch As Apple Localizes Its Heart-Wrenching Christmas Commercial For Chinese New Year

Apple is betting such emotional imagery will win over fans in the Chinese market as well as it did in the west.

Remember this commercial from around Christmas?

It was well received, to say the least, and made more than a few people tear up. Now on the advent of another major holiday – Chinese New Year – Apple decided to remake the ad with a few tweaks for its audience in China. Since neither commercial features any spoken dialogue, you don’t really need to understand either language to get the message:

You can find the high-res version hosted on QQ Video here.

The two commercials both feature a young woman and her grandmother. The woman discovers an old music record with her grandmother’s voice on it. She then uses an assortment of Apple products to create a digital duet of herself and her grandmother singing together – a heartfelt gift for the holidays.

Apple is betting such emotional imagery will win over fans in the Chinese market as well as it did in the west. China played a huge part in Apple’s recent record-breaking sales quarter.

The song in the Chinese version is “Always Smile,” a song by 1940s singer Zhou Xuan. Zhou recorded over 200 songs in her career and starred in more than 40 films.

I'm don't believe the Chinese new year is a shopping holiday. it's mostly feasting and visits, and not gifting like xmas
