Some Insights About Facebook’s 10-Year Strategy

I have just read “9 slides that explain Facebook’s 10-year strategy” by Hope King at CNN Money and found it Inspiring.

In my post from last month “Owning the Chasms” I refer exactly to this topic and I claim that the big vision will not be realized if the industry and the large digital service providers will not gain control of the ecosystem, as there will be chasms that can just bury the entire vision. Hence they must be on top of all the elements and provide end to end solution, or at the minimum enable all the building blocks for the industry, so such solutions will be evident. Read “Owning the Chasms” for more on that and also the follow-up post “Owning the Chasms – So NOw What?” which discusses the opportunities for the industry, for startups and for new value creators.

If you follow the model described in the posts above, the three new technologies have a lot to do with Facebook (FB) (unlike what is claimed in the original article above). The following diagram is taken from the “Owning the Chasms”:

And the next one, plugs Facebook’s 10 years strategy into this model:

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

It is an essential new tool required to fill a chasm at the epicenter: the Services“As the world is increasingly connected, even more content — photos, videos, web pages — will bubble up, and flood our attention span. Facebook thinks this AI can help sort through the noise.”

Drones are new type of Pipes”Facebook estimates between 1.1 billion and 2.8 billion people, or 16% to 40% of the world’s population, do not have access to a mobile network that can connect them to the Web. To reach these people, Facebook wants to build and deploy drones to beam Internet access from satellites.”

Virtual Reality (VR)

VR are the ultimate Interfaces“The world’s largest social network doesn’t think sharing our lives through text, photo, and video is enough. It wants users to feel like they’re actually sitting next to whichever aunt decides to film an embarrassing video of their cousin’s first school play.”
