Which Pot Stock Category Outperformed Last Week

There are 225 cannabis and cannabis-related companies trading on the various North American stock exchanges but only 23 meet the criteria* for inclusion in the munKNEE  Pure-Play "Seed-to-Sale" Pot Stocks Index which consists of two sub-categories: the munKNEE Canadian Pure-Play Licensed Producers (LPs) Pot Stock Index and the munKNEE Pure-Play American Multi-State Operators (MSOs) Pot Stock Index. Did the LP or MSO sub-category perform better last week? Which sub-category has performed best YTD? This article has the answers.

*The criteria for inclusion in the munKNEE marijuana indices are vertically integrated (seed-to-sale) companies that derive 100% of their revenue from the sector, have a market capitalization in excess of US$300, and trade for at least US$1/share. Only 6 Canadian LP stocks and 17 American MSO stocks meet those criteria.

The sub-category munKNEE Canadian Pure-Play Licensed Producers Pot Stock Index

  • was +0.5% last week and
  • is now +3.0% YTD.
    • Its constituents are: Canopy (CGC), Tilray (TLRY), Cronos (CRON), Aurora (ACB), Organigram (OGI), and Hexo (HEXO).
      • The performance of the sub-category was relatively flat last week with none of the constituents changing in price by 5% or more.
        • Aurora changed the most last week at +4.3% but still remains down YTD (-11.9%)

The sub-index munKNEE American Pure-Play Multi-State Operators Pot Stock Sub-Category Index

  • was +2.7% last week and
  • is now +10.8% YTD.
    • Its constituents are: Curaleaf (CURLF), Green Thumb (GTBIF), Trulieve (TRSSF), Verano (VRNOF), Cresco (CRLBF), TerrAscend (TRSSF), Columbia (CCHWF), Harvest Health (HRVSF), Ascend Wellness (AAWH), Planet 13 (PLNHF), Ayr (AYRWF), Jushi (JUSHF), 4 Front (FFNTF), Charlotte's Web (CWBHF), Gage (GAGE), Acreage (ACRDF & ACRHF) and Goodness Growth (GDNSF).
      • Only 5 constituents in the sub-category changed in price by 5% or more last week, namely:
        • Green Thumb advanced +9.4% and is now +31.8% YTD
          • announced the opening its 16th Rise dispensary in Pennsylvania - and 62nd store nationwide - on Tuesday, August 10.
          • announced that it has acquired two companies that hold contractual interests in a corporation with vertically integrated cannabis operations in Rhode Island. The acquisition includes one of only three retail locations in the state.
        • TerrAscend was up +8.3% last week but is still -12.7% YTD
          • announced that it will report its much-anticipated Q2 2021 financials on August 19 before the market opens.
        • Goodness Growth was up +6.9% last week and is now +15.5% YTD
          • announced that it will report its highly anticipated Q2 financial results on Friday, August 13, 2021  before the market opens.
        • Planet 13 was up +5.1% last week and remains unchanged YTD
          • announced $11.9 million in sales during July with gross margins in excess of 50%.
        • Verano was down -5.8% last week and is now down -35.6% since it began trading in February.

In Conclusion:

  • the munKNEE Pure-Play "Seed-to-Sale" Pot Stocks Index was: +2.2% last week and is now +8.7% YTD while 
  • the MSO sub-index
    • outperformed the LP sub-index at +2.7% vs. +0.5% last week and has 
    • outperformed the LP sub-index at +10.8% vs. +3.0% YTD.
