Stock Picking: Olin Corporation

This week, I'm seeking the second robust dividend-paying stock from the basic materials business sector for my Ivy portfolio.

That basic materials sector has thirteen industries all related to mining, making, and delivering essential commodities. They are: agricultural inputs; aluminum; building materials; chemicals; coal; copper; industrial metals; gold; paper; silver; specialty chemicals; steel.

Today I'm reviewing another small-cap specialty chemicals company, named Olin Corporation. Its trading ticker symbol is OLN. I last reported on this company on June 6, 2018.

Olin Corp manufactures and sells in three segments Chlor Alkali & Vinnys, Epoxy, and Winchester.

The Chlor Alkali Products and Vinyls segment offers chlorine and caustic soda, ethylene dichloride, and vinyl chloride monomers, hydrochloric acid, hydrogen, bleach products, and potassium hydroxide.

The Epoxy segment provides allyl chloride and epichlorohydrin, as well as acetone, bisphenol, cumene, and phenol, and resins that are used in adhesives, paints and coatings, composites, and flooring, electrical laminates, paints, electronics, and construction.

The Winchester segment offers sporting ammunition products, including shotshells, small caliber centerfire, and rimfire ammunition products for hunters and recreational shooters, and law enforcement agencies; small caliber military ammunition products for use in infantry and mounted weapons; and industrial products comprising gauge loads and powder-actuated tool loads for maintenance applications in power, concrete, and construction industries.

The company markets its products through its sales force, as well as directly to various industrial customers, mass merchants, retailers, wholesalers, other distributors, and the U.S. Government and its prime contractors.

Olin Corporation was founded in 1892 and is headquartered in Clayton, Missouri.

I use three key data points to gauge the value of any dividend equity or fund like Olin Corporation:

(1) Price

(2) Dividends

(3) Returns

Besides those three, four more keys  will finally unlock an equity or fund in which to invest.

But those first three primary keys, best tell whether a company has made, is making, and will make money.

OLN Price

Olin's price per share was $20.81 at Wednesday's market close. A year ago its price was $36.85 for a price decrease of $16.04 per share for the year, that's a 43.58% drop.

Assuming OLN's price will trade in the range of $18 to $40  next year, Olin's recent $20.81 price could improve by $5.00 and grow to $25.81 by late-November, 2019.

OLN Dividends

Olin's most recent quarterly dividend was $0.20 declared October 25th and payable December 10th.

That $0.20 quarterly stipend equates to an annual amount of $0.80 yielding 3.8% at Wednesday's closing $20.81 price.

Gains For OLN?

Adding the $0.80 annual dividend to my estimated $5.00 annual price upside for Olin Corporation adds up to a $5.80 potential gross annual per share gain, which will be reduced by costs to trade the shares.

A little under $1,000.00 invested today at the $12.47 recent price buys 48 OLN shares.

A $10 broker fee paid half at purchase and half at sale costs $0.21 per share

Subtracting that $0.21 brokerage cost from the estimated $5.80 gross annual gain leaves a net gain of $5.59 X 48 shares

= $268.32

for a 26.8% net gain on a $998.88 investment.

Therefore, Olin Corporation, whose trading ticker symbol is OLN, now shows a possible 26.8% net gain including a 3.8% dividend yield.

Thirteen brokers cover this stock:

Five brokers say "buy" OLN shares

Two brokers say OLN with "outperform" peers

Six brokers say "hold" your OLN shares.

Those thirteen Wall Street wizards collectively price OLN shares at $28.92 next November. That's $3.11 over my $25.81 estimate.

Therefore, you may look at these speculative numbers as follows: Olin Corporation, whose trading ticker symbol is OLN, has made money, is making money, and could net a 15% to a 40% net annual gain including a 3.8% dividend yield. It could be more, it could be less.

The above speculation is based on past year performance. The actual results remain to be seen to determine if Olin Corporation is worth your time and money.
