The company has entered a strategic collaboration with ABB to develop next-generation gigawatt-scale data centers capable of managing increasing AI workloads. The initiative will center on introducing an 800 VDC power architecture for 1 MW server racks, representing a significant step forward in efficient and scalable power delivery for AI infrastructure.
This partnership underscores NVIDIA’s growing commitment to strengthening the backbone of artificial intelligence operations. By working with ABB, a leader in electrical and automation technologies, NVIDIA aims to enhance both energy efficiency and computing performance in large-scale AI data centers. ABB’s deep expertise in direct current (DC) and solid-state power distribution aligns perfectly with NVIDIA’s pursuit of innovation, setting a new benchmark for the next generation of high-performance facilities.
ABB’s Role in Next-Generation Power Distribution
ABB will play a crucial role in developing the power systems required for AI-driven data centers. These advanced facilities will depend on medium-voltage uninterruptible power supplies (MV UPS) and solid-state DC distribution systems that efficiently deliver power to server racks. ABB’s President of Electrification, Giampiero Frisio, highlighted the company’s early investments in uninterruptible power supplies, DC systems, and solid-state electronics as key enablers for meeting AI’s growing energy needs.
Recent innovations from ABB demonstrate its leadership in power efficiency and reliability. The company’s HiPerGuard, the world’s first solid-state MV UPS, enhances power density and energy efficiency in a smaller footprint. Its SACE Infinitus, the world’s first IEC-certified solid-state circuit breaker, delivers the speed and control necessary for effective direct current distribution.
These innovations form the foundation of ABB’s efforts to support scalable and sustainable AI operations.
NVIDIA’s Expanding AI Infrastructure
NVIDIA remains a cornerstone in the semiconductor and artificial intelligence sectors. Its graphics processing units (GPUs) power large language models, machine learning algorithms, and data-intensive AI systems worldwide.
The company’s Cuda software platform enables developers to efficiently train and optimize AI models, while its ongoing expansion into data center networking solutions ensures that increasingly complex workloads are managed with precision and speed.
With a market capitalization of $4.55 trillion, NVIDIA’s strategic positioning reflects its dominance in AI technology. The collaboration with ABB comes at a time when global data center demand is expected to surge from 80 GW in 2024 to 220 GW by 2030, with AI workloads accounting for nearly 70% of that growth. This joint effort positions NVIDIA to remain at the forefront of high-efficiency AI infrastructure.
