Galena Biopharma Launches Anti-Nausea Drug Zuplenz

Shares of Galena Biopharma (GALE) are up 5% after the company announced that it has launched its anti-nausea drug known as Zuplenz . Zuplenz is an oral soluble film that helps reduce nausea and vomiting in patients with: 

  1. Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting -- CINV
  2. Radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting -- RINV
  3. Post-operative nausea and vomiting -- PONV

Zuplenz is a bioequivalent to odanestron -- a similar product that also reduces nausea and vomiting. The drug product from Galena is now available worldwide and will be available at two dose levels, 4 mg and 8 mg. The benefits, as per  the press release Galena released today: 

  • Rapidly dissolves in the mouth in about 10 seconds
  • Eliminates the burden of swallowing pills during emesis and in cases of oral irritation
  • Does not require water to administer
  • Pleasant peppermint flavor with no gritty aftertaste
  • Non-sedating  

Zuplenz technology uses a type of FarmFilm technology that allows the soluble film to dissolve in the patient's mouth.  The film dissolves in about 10 seconds or less.
