Deepmind Cofounder To Lead A New AI Unit At Microsoft

Microsoft Corp (Nasdaq: MSFT) just hired the cofounder of DeepMind – an artificial intelligence startup that Google bought in 2014. Its shares are up nearly 1.0% at writing.


Suleyman also cofounded an AI startup called Inflection AI

Mustafa Suleyman will now serve as the chief executive of Microsoft AI. It’s been more than a year since he left Alphabet Inc (Nasdaq: GOOGL) and cofounded another artificial intelligence startup called Inflection AI.

Karen Simonyan – the other cofounder of that company will also join as the chief scientist of Microsoft AI. The tech titan has also hired “several” other employees of Inflection AI as well, as per its memo on Tuesday.

The news arrives more than a month after MSFT reported its financial results for the second quarter that handily topped Street estimates (read more).

Microsoft stock has rallied more than 50% over the past twelve months.  


Microsoft is moving internal executives to the new AI unit as well

Misha Bilenko (corporate vice president of Microsoft gen AI) and Mikhail Parakhin (chief executive of advertising and web services) will also join the new AI unit under Mustafa Suleyman as well. Satya Nadell – the chief executive of $MSFT wrote in a memo today:

I’ve known Mustafa for years and have greatly admired him as a founder of DeepMind and Inflection, and as a visionary, product maker, and builder of pioneering teams that go after bold missions.


Note that Google remains a top competitor of Microsoft Corp in artificial intelligence even though it has faced several issues related to its Gemini chatbot as well as AI-enabled image generator.

Shares of Alphabet Inc are in the red at writing.
