Daily Stock Pick: Haverty Furniture Companies

A portfolio of stocks I've been building since September 3 is named Volio. It will eventually hold 52 dividend dogs. Volio is the fifth portfolio I've built (at a one dividend dog per-week pace) since 2014. Five portfolios = V for Volio!

Today I'm reviewing the first of four consumer cyclicaly stocks striving to join my Volio folio. This could be my twenty-fifth pick for Volio!

That consumer cyclical sector includes twenty-eight industries ranging from Advertising Agencies to Apparel, Autos, Broadcasting, Department Stores, Gambling, Leisure, Lodging, Packaging, Personal Services, Shoes, Restaurants, Rubber, Plastics, Textiles, and all such consumer aimed enterprises.

My subject today is a small-cap furniture retailer named, Haverty Furniture Companies Inc. Their trading ticker symbol is HVT. This is my second report about Haverty Furniture Companies Inc (HVT). I selected  HVT for the Ivy Portfolio as of February 1, 2019

Haverty Furniture Companies Inc is a specialty retailer of residential furniture and accessories.

It provides various products such as Sofa Tables, Sleepers, End Tables, Cocktail Tables, Accent Pieces, Display Cabinets, Wall Decor, Florals and Tress, and other related products.

The company operates primarily in the Southern and Midwestern U.S. All its activities are encompassed in its Merchandise division. The company derives the majority of its revenue from its upholstery products and, secondarily, from bedroom furniture.

As of January 9, 2020, it operated 121 showrooms in 16 states in the Southern and Midwestern regions.

Haverty Furniture Companies, Inc. was founded in 1885 and is based in Atlanta, Georgia.

I use three key data points to gauge dividend equities or funds like Haverty Furniture Companies Inc:

(1) Price

(2) Dividends

(3) Returns

Besides those three, several other keys will finally unlock an equity or fund in which to invest, or not.

Those three basic keys, however, best tell whether a company has made, is making, and will make money.

HVT Price

Haverty's price per share closed at $20.20 last Friday. A year ago its price was $21.80. Thus, in the past year, its market price went down  $1.60, or just over 7.3%.

Assuming Haverty's stock trades in the range of $17.50 to $25 this next year, its recent $20.20 price could rise by $0.80 to reach $22.00  by February 18, 2021, assuming upward price momentum resumes.

HVT Dividends

Haverty's latest declared quarterly dividend was $0.20 paid December 11. That $0.20 Q dividend equates to an annual payout of $0.80 and yields 3.96% at Friday's $20.20 share price.

HVT Gains?

Adding the $0.80 annual estimated dividend to my $0.80 estimate of Haverty Furniture Companies Inc price upside shows a $1.60 potential gross gain, per share, which will be reduced by any costs to trade those shares.

Say we put a little over $1,000.00 today in Haverty Furniture Companies Inc at its recent $20.20 price, would buy 50 shares of HVT.

A $10 broker fee paid half at purchase and half at sale could cost us $0.20 per share.

Subtract that $0.20 brokerage cost from the estimated $1.60 gross estimated gain per share leaves a net gain of $1.40 X 50 shares = $70.00 or a 7% net gain on a $1,010.00 investment.

Therefore, Haverty Furniture Companies Inc, whose trading ticker symbol is HVT shows a possible 7% net gain including a 3.96% dividend yield. It could be more, it could be less.

The above speculation is based on past year performance. The actual results remain to be seen to learn if Haverty Furniture Companies Inc, is worth your time and money.
