Daily Stock Pick: CVR Energy

That portfolio of stocks I've been building since September 3, 2019, named Volio, now holds 52 dividend dogs. Volio is the fifth portfolio I've built (at a one dividend dog per-week pace) since 2014. Five portfolios = V for Volio!

Day by day, starting the day after Labor Day, I'll start building a new portfolio of 52 dividend dogs at a one stock per-week pace until September 2022! That new portfolio, named Vista, will become the sixth portfolio I've assembled over the past six years.

Today we'll review the third of five Dogs of the Year top finishing stocks that have performed the best during their one-year stint in each of my first five portfolios. We'll look at where the stock is now.

Perhaps one of the stocks I discuss this week could be one you'll want to buy and hold forever.

The Safari Top Dog or DOTY and my subject for today is a small-cap oil and gas refiner and marketer named, CVR Energy Inc. Its trading ticker is CVI. This is my first report on the dog of the year (DOTY) selection from 2018.

CVR Energy Inc is a holding company that engages in petroleum refining and nitrogen fertilizer manufacturing through its holdings in CVR Refining LP and CVR Partners, LP.

CVR Refining LP includes several complex full coking crude oil refineries, along with a crude oil gathering system, pipelines and storage tanks, and marketing and supply.

The company's refineries can process blends of a variety of crude oil ranging from heavy sour to light sweet crude oil. Crude oil for CVR's refineries is supplied through its wholly-owned gathering system and pipeline. From its refineries, CVR supplies product through tanker trucks directly to customers located in close geographic proximity and customers at throughput terminals.

The company's customers include retailers, railroads, and farm cooperatives.

CVR Energy, Inc. was founded in 1906 and is based in Sugar Land, Texas.

I use three key data points to gauge dividend equities or funds like CVR Energy Inc:

(1) Price

(2) Dividends

(3) Returns

Those three basic keys best tell whether a company has made, is making, and will make money.

CVI Price

CVR Energy's price per share closed at $16.33 yesterday. A year ago its price was $40.59. Price fell $24.26 or over 59.75% last year.

Assuming CVR Energy's stock trades in the range of $12 to $25 this next year, its recent $16.33 price might rise by $0.67 to reach $17.00 by September 2, 2021.

CVI Dividends

CVR Energy's most recently declared quarterly dividend was none. Had a dividend been declared it would have paid out the end of August. Thus the annual dividend and yield for CVR Energy inc is none.

CVI Gains?

Adding no annual estimated dividend to my $0.67 optimistic estimate of CVR Energy's price upside shows a $0.67 potential gross gain, per share, to be reduced by any costs to trade the shares.

If we put little under $1,000.00 today in  CVR Energy Inc  at $16.33, we would buy 61 shares of CVI stock.

A $10 broker fee paid half at purchase and half at sale could cost us about $0.16 per share.

Subtract that $0.16 brokerage cost from my estimated $0.67 gross gain per share results in a net gain of $0.51 X 61 shares = $31.11 for a 3.1% net gain on a $996.13 investment.

Thus, CVR Energy Inc shows a possible 3.1% net gain including no dividend yield. It could be more, it could be less.

The above speculation is based on past performance and supposition. Only time and money invested will tell if CVR Energy Inc is worth it.

(Probably not.)

Ok, interesting. That Volio portfolio looks like it will certainly be a good investment, which I am guessing shares will be available for purchase in the near future. Or perhaps I am way off base and it will just be one constantly posting about how much profit they are making. But I rather doubt that. I also doubt that it is all "just for fun".
