Daily Stock Pick: Braskem SA

That portfolio of stocks I've been building since September 3, 2019, named Volio now, holds 52 dividend dogs. Volio is the fifth portfolio I've built (at a one dividend dog per-week pace) since 2014. Five portfolios = V for Volio!

Day by day starting the day after Labor Day I'll start building a new portfolio of 52 dividend dogs at a one stock per-week pace until September 2022! That new portfolio, named Vista, will become the sixth portfolio I've assembled over the past six years.

Today we'll review the first of five Dogs of the Year top finishing stocks that have performed the best during their one-year stint. We'll look at where it is now. Perhaps one of the stocks I discuss this week could be one you'll want to buy and hold forever.

My subject today is a mid-cap chemical manufacturer named, Braskem SA. Its trading ticker is BAK. This is my first report my very first dog of the year selection from 2017.

Braskem SA manufactures and sells chemicals, petrochemicals, fuels, and utilities. The company also generates electricity.

The firm's five segments are based on product type or geography. The chemicals Unit segment, which generates the most revenue of any segment, sells petrochemicals throughout Brazil.

The polyolefins segment sells polyethylene and polypropylene. The vinyls segment sells polymer vinyl chloride, caustic soda, and chloride.

The USA and Europe Unit includes the production, operations and sale of polypropylene in the United States and Germany.

The Mexico Unit includes the production, operations and sale of ethylene, HDPE and LDPE in Mexico. The majority of revenue comes from Brazil..

The company was formerly known as Copene Petroquímica do Nordeste S.A. and changed its name to Braskem S.A. in 2002.

Braskem S.A. was founded in 1972 and is headquartered in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

I use three key data points to gauge dividend equities or funds like SA:

(1) Price

(2) Dividends

(3) Returns

Those three basic keys best tell whether a company has made, is making, and will make money.

BAK Price

Braskem's price per share closed at $8.10 Friday. A year ago its price was $13.95. Price fell $5.85 or about 42.7% last year.

Assuming Braskem's stock trades in the range of $4 to $14 this next year, its recent $8.10 price might rise by $1.90 to reach $10.00 by August 31, 2021.

BAK Dividends

Braskem's most recently declared annual dividend was $0.4052, paid January 10th. That annual dividend yields 5% at yesterday's $8.10 share price.

BAK Gains?

Adding the $0.41 annual estimated dividend to my $1.90 optimistic estimate of Braskem's price upside shows a $2.31 potential gross gain, per share, to be reduced by any costs to trade the shares.

If we put little under $1,000.00 today in Braskem SA at $8.10, we would buy 123 shares of BAK stock.

A $10 broker fee paid half at purchase and half at sale could cost us $0.08 per share.

Subtract that $0.08 brokerage cost from my estimated $2.31 gross gain per share results in a net gain of $2.23 X 123 shares = $274.29 for a 17.43% net gain on a $996.30 investment.

Thus, Braskem SA shows a possible 17.43% net gain including a 5.00% dividend yield. It could be more, it could be less.

The above speculation is based on past performance and supposition. Only time and money invested will tell if Braskem SA is worth it.

I had, perhaps unreasonably, that a dividend DOG was a loser. Clearly that is not the meaning used here. Perhaps "Dividend Darlings" would be a more obvious description. Certainly, words meanings and interpretations are quite important.

Creating investment portfolios must be an arduous effort, requiring a great deal of investigation and fair amounts of insight and expertise.

Thanks for the interesting and educational article.
