Daily Stock Analysis: Oil-Dri

Oil-Dri Corp of America is known by the ticker symbol ODC and is listed in the consumer defensive sector as a personal products company. This is my first report on Oil-Dri Corp for this Vista portfolio. I last reported on this company for a couple of my previous portfolios.

Oil-Dri Corp of America develops, manufactures, and markets sorbent products made primarily from clay. Its absorbent offerings, which draw liquid up, include cat litter, floor products, toxin control substances for livestock, and agricultural chemical carriers. The company has two segments based on the different characteristics of two primary customer groups namely Retail and Wholesale Products Group and Business to Business Products Group. The company's products are sold under various brands such as Cat's Pride, Jonny Cat, Amlan, Agsorb, Verge, Pure-Flo, and Ultra-Clear.

Its customers include mass merchandisers, wholesale clubs, drugstore chains, pet specialty retail outlets, dollar stores, retail grocery stores, distributors of industrial cleanup and automotive products, environmental service companies, and sports field product users; processors and refiners of edible oils, petroleum-based oils, and biodiesel fuel; manufacturers of animal feed and agricultural chemicals; distributors of animal health and nutrition products; and marketers of consumer products.

Oil-Dri Corporation of America was founded in 1941 and is based in Chicago, Illinois.

Three key data points gauge dividend equities or funds like Oil-Dri Corp of America (ODC):

(1) Price

(2) Dividends

(3) Returns

Those three basic keys best tell whether any company has made, is making, and will make money.

ODC Price

Oil-Dri's price per share was $35.38 as of Monday's market close. One year ago its price was $35.02. So ODC's share price has gone nowhere in the past year.

If Oil-Dri's stock trades in the range of $32.00 to $40.00 this next year, its recent $35.38 price might rise by $1.62 to reach $37.00 by September 2, 2022. My estimate is $0.02 over the average annual price increase over the past ten years.

ODC Dividends

Oil-Dri's most recent regular quarterly dividend payout of$0.27 was made on August 27th. The estimated annual payout of $1.08 yields 3.05% based on Monday's $35.38 closing price. ODC has paid quarterly dividends, since January 1990. That is 31 years.

ODC Returns

Adding the $1.08 annual Oil-Dri forward-looking dividend to my $1.62 price upside estimate shows a $2.70 potential gross gain, per share, to be reduced by any costs to trade ODC shares.

At Monday's $35.38 price per share, a little under $1000 would buy 28 shares.

A $10 broker fee (if charged) would be paid half at purchase and half at sale and might cost us$0.36 per share.

Subtract that maybe $0.36 brokerage cost from my estimated $2.70 gross gain per share results in a net gain of $2.34 X 28 shares = $65.52 for a 6.5% net gain on a $990.64 investment.

So it is that Oil-Dri Corp of America (ODC) shows a possible 6.5% net gain including a 3.05% forward estimated dividend yield.

Over the next year at this time, a $1000 investment in Oil-Dri Corp of America (ODC) could generate $30.50 in cash dividends alone. And a single share bought at Monday's closing price was $35.38! Thus, ODC's share price is about $5 ABOVE the dividend income from $1K invested. So, according to my dogcatcher ideal, now is NOT the time to pick up ODC shares. The dividend from $1k invested is BELOW the single share price. Wait for ODC's price to drop to $32.00. Consider yourself alerted.

All of the estimates above are speculation based on the past history of Oil-Dri Corp of America (ODC). Only time and money invested in this stock will determine its market value.
