Cannabis Central: Pure-Play Pot Stock Index Reversed Last Week

Only 25 of the approximately 300 actively trading pot stocks fulfill the criteria for inclusion in the munKNEE Pot Stock Index of being pure-play* cannabis companies (i.e derive 100% of their revenue from the sale of cannabis or cannabis-related products) whose stocks consistently trade for at least US$1/share. Below are the major winners and losers for the week ending August 29th:

Major Losers

5 constituents finished the week DOWN in price of which only 1 did so to any significant degree, namely:

  •  Avicanna (AVCNF) -23.5% vs. +28.2% the previous week.

The constituents operate in 4 categories based on their primary area of focus in the cannabis industry and the constituents within each category are identified below with how each of the categories did:

  1. The Vertically Integrated (i.e. Seed-to-Sale) Category consists of 21 companies that grow, process, and sell cannabis and hemp flower and related products and it went UP 6.7% vs. DOWN 9.5% the previous week and UP 11.3% the week before that.
    • the 7 Canadian Licensed Producer (LPs) constituents went UP 4.2%, on average, vs. DOWN 7.3% the previous week and UP 2.5% the week before that. They are: ACBAPHACGCCRONOGIROMJF and TLRY

  2. The Extraction Category consists of 2 companies focused on the extraction of cannabis compounds and their infusion into consumer products and it went UP 3.7%, on average, vs. DOWN 8.1% the previous week and UP 4.9% the week before that. They are  NEPT   and VLNCF
  3. The Consumption Devices Category consists of 1 company, namely GNLN, focused on developing and selling personal consumption devices for cannabis consumers such as vape pens and inhalers. It went UP 2.7% vs. DOWN 11.6% the previous week and DOWN 24.7% the week before that.
  4. The Biotechnology Category consists of a pharmaceutical company, AVCNF, which markets new drugs utilizing cannabinoids (CBD). It went DOWN 23.5% vs. UP 28.2% the previous week and DOWN 3.7% the week before that.

*Please note: The 25 pure-play constituents in the munKNEE.com pure-play Pot Stock Index are just that, pure, deriving 100% of their revenue from the sale of recreational and medicinal cannabis and consumption-related products so as to reflect the true health of the marijuana industry in the U.S. and Canada. As such, the index excludes the ancillary companies, often included in marijuana ETFs and other industry tracking indices, that generate little, if any, of their revenue directly from the cannabis industry.
